Hey,

I rang Virgin retentions around mid-day yesterday and they said they would change me from 2mb to 4mb for free. It didnt change so I rang back after 3 hours and told them, they said wait until 2pm tomorrow and see if its changed. Have done and its same as. Rang them and they said 'Its been done the system says we cant do anything'.

I have done speedtests, they still say 2mb, and the modem config page (http://192.168.100.1) still says the maximum downstream data rate is 2048000 (2mb)

What can I do, and do I need to do anything on my end for it to work? I have rebooted the modem many times, to no avail.

Thanks,
TehRobG

Reboot your modem for starters. :)

Apparently now all 'deals' from retentions go through a backend which checks how deserving the person being offered the deal is. It's obviously decided you're just a chancer and continues to give you the service you are paying for. You can invoke the other side of the offer and accept cancellation to go elsewhere.

Toto: I have done that many times.

Ernie_C: Both representatives I spoke to said I actually HAVE been upgraded.

You could always wait as they will be upgrading both 2 and 4Mb packages soon anyway :)

I didn't know this, if its true I can see it as good in _some_ cases.
NOTE I said some case, before you start slating me.

Link or pm me a copy of the e-mail that says this?

A chap in retensions told me and before you ask I have his name, but won't embarrass him.

A chap in retensions told me and before you ask I have his name, but won't embarrass him.

There is nothing on the internal websites and it was stated by a very senior manager only last week on a internal web conference that this is NOT the case.

So i don't care what retentions are telling you, It is not on the cards. Its not going to happen if it's not on the cards. Will just repeat myself it is not planned to happen and then i will go :banghead: and would do the same to the guy from retentions who lied to you if i knew his name.

I can't see why he would lie unless it's VM's policy :( , there was nothing for him to gain, as I was cancelling the TV not the broadband

Can't imagine why he would mate, but as Bill C has said there has been no internal e-mails or anything on our intranet about a 2mbit and 4mbit speed uplift.

Sorry you were lied to. :(

So here's something I've been wondering for a while... Who chose the word "uplift", and why that word in particular especially given the appropriateness of words like "increase" or "upgrade"?

Is it just a generic industry term?

No problem :)

Now that I'm home I've dug out the conversation I had with him, it's thanks to the billing department that I write everything down, name, day, time etc.
(see they are good for something ;))

"Once the 20Mb service has been implemented we will then double the 2 and 4Mb broadband package to 4 and 8Mb"I presume to keep ahead of ADSL

PS maybe I should phone and double check that he has indeed cancelled my TV

I rang again at 19:30 - they say I am on 4MB, yet the modem, and speedtests say different. Am I being lied to?

TehRobG if you were ex-Telewest I'd be all over this.
Hopefully one of the ex-NTL staff will see this and help you out.

fizgog, nope mate still never heard a word about the other packages having a uplift.

VM will say anything to keep your business, I was told the same thing, but this upgrade is not true.

Yeah, I'm Ex-NTL. And thanks r00t. Hopefully a member of ex-ntl staff will see it.

That was at abyss as one of the images had my MAC in.

Before they said I was upgraded I was getting 1.98MB. Now I get:
Tue, 26 Jun 2007 20:24:49 GMT

1st 512K took 4476 ms = 114.4 KB/sec, approx 943 Kbps, 0.92 Mbps
2nd 512K took 4567 ms = 112.1 KB/sec, approx 924 Kbps, 0.9 Mbps
3rd 512K took 8352 ms = 61.3 KB/sec, approx 505 Kbps, 0.49 Mbps
4th 512K took 4436 ms = 115.4 KB/sec, approx 951 Kbps, 0.93 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 831 Kbps, 0.81 Mbps

WTF. Modem still says 2mb.
