View Full Version : Surfboard 4100, stuck on 10Mb downloads after upgrade...

A few weeks after the 20Mb switchover, I'm still not seeing download speeds > 9Mb.

Now despite having an older Surfboard 4100 modem, it should still be more than capable of the new download speeds... But the only improvement I've had, is a slight increase in the upload speeds.

Are there any instances of some 4100s not being able to cope with the upgrade?

Is a replacement modem simply the answer to my problem, or am I just one of the unfortunate few where the upgrade has turned out to be a downgrade, and there is little more to be done? https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/04/70.gif

Yes, your modem should be "upgraded" to an ntl 250/255 if you are on the ex NTL network.

Whilst the modem can handle the speed, I think the change to the network QAM has kind of fubarred that modem.

To be honest I was a bit loathed to give up my SB4100, but I am pleased I did.

Yes, especially as you've been paying to rent a modem you've not been renting for some time now. (It's included in the service charge)

whenyou say 'a slight increase in the upload speeds' what are we talking here?, if its above the 512k and near the 768k upoad rate that you can be reasonably sure your section has been officially updgraded and the 20Mbit down has happened.

if you are near the 768k upload and still seeing this low download speed, a modem change to NTL250/VM255 might help but then it might also be over subscription on your UBR at the other end of the connection and you cant do anything to change that, only VM can.
