Hi m8

I live on grimsby road(cleethorpes) & have been suffering really badly this weekend on my 4mb line, (best ive got is 1.2 mb), am currently getting 1.1mb with a very high ping :(
It went back to normal for a few hours last night (1am to about 3am).. then when I checked this morning.. its back to being terrible :(

Most the day ive had around 0.5mb speeds.

Anything you could suggest?

Ah good (I guess I should be happy Knowing it isnt a computer/modem problem lol). :D

Do you think its a problem with the grimsby road exchange?

Should I phone virgin up & ask them to have a look at the problem?

I would, I live near Cleethorpes cemetery & don't seem to be having any problems, so it looks like a pretty localised issue...

Thanks for replys guys.

They have booked a technician for between 12 & 6 tommorow, so fingers crossed it will be fixed :)

I told the 151 operator others close by are having the same problem, but he said theres nothing wrong with my post codes area (DN35 7DN) & Definetly isnt a problem with my exchange :td:

He said it isnt my modem aswell because he tested it, also no packet loss (4% it was).

Im really unsure what the problem may be if hes saying its not my modem, not the exchange... it can't be my computer as ive tested 3 diff 1s & a laptop... but still getting 0.6 speeds:(

TrancerSteve

Its not a local problem.

But if others in the same town arent suffering & they are fine, what else can it be?
It just seems to be people on certain streets that are (in grimsby/cleethorpes).

Gone crap again on the Wirral (CH63). Speed test showed a 0.4Meg d/l speed on my 10Meg line.

Would you be happy ordering a pint and getting short served? How do we complain - who do we email / write to.

Cant handle *another* indian call centre.

Hello friend.

Sorry for the delay in posting but my nets been so bad the websites can't load up :(

I tested it this morning at 8.30 before I went to work & it was wonderful, I was recieving 3.9mb on my 4mb line with my upload speed normal aswell (Think it was 350kbps).
I came back at 12 & it was still ok (basically the same as before).
I then tested it again at just after 3pm when the problems start & I was back to 0.3mb 314kps (www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ & www.speedtest.net say).
But my upload speed was still the same as earlier (ok) - that dosnt seem to get affected.

The engineer couldnt come out today as his house was flooded, I hope he is ok and the damage isnt too bad.
They have rebooked an enginner for wednesday afternoon so hopefully things wil be ok then.

Interesting - my first instinct is that 'sounds' like a classic case of over-subscription, but I live fairly close to you and don't appear to have the same problem

- if you click the 'connection' link in the toolbar at the top of this forum what do you get?

mine is cpc3-grim1-0-0-cust***.nott.cable.ntl.com

- edit out the 'cust' number as I have ;)

I've had a play with http://www.speedtest.net and found that some points give higher speeds than others.

I live in Burnley and get better speeds from dublin than london. I'm on the 10Mb service and get around 5Mb from Dublin and 512kb from London.

Not very impressive really.

I do seem to have got these problems since moving to another area of Burnley. Maybe more people are using it in this area.

But if they can't provide a 10Mb connection why are they promising a 20Mb one. Is it gonna be once in a blue moon thing?

I'm wondering whether to lower my subscription to the lowest package because I feel I'm not getting what I'm paying for.

I do like cable broadband because it's stable, but if I'm not breaking the 5Mb speed I may as well go on a cheaper package.

Anyone else thinking the same?

barrybarfly
26-06-2007, 17:32
I have no idea what speed I'm getting!! I'm on the 10/20meg package and speedtest.net says my speed is about 1600kbps to the london server, yet this site says my overall avg is 9735kbps. Virgin say my speeds ok and yet speedtest have always been accurate in the past. How can I be sure my speed IS ok?

Only 3 threads? That's fantastic if you ask me :D

You could probably max all the time with 4 or 5?

A little better in York but not much. I'm supposed to be on 4 meg.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/06/13.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

There seems to be a lot of VM customers not getting what they are paying for now. If this carries on much longer IMO the trickle of people leaving will become a flood.

Much better! And I should be getting my 20meg upgrade within the next week if I'm lucky. Let you know wether that works or not!
I'm in Grantham NG31.
