Posted this on TV a few days ago - lack of channel guide/red button functions... now it's spread to internet going down for 30 minute at a time chunks.

They're running off separate things so I don't think it's a set-top box issue - TV is set top box, internet is stand alone modem. Connection to the house was recently rewired by NTL so I don't think it could be that - are there any outstanding service issues in the Derby area it could be? Or do I have to brave that stupid Indian call centre who can't accept that people are unable to be in whenever they deign to grace you with an engineer appointment (which won't be kept) in the next 3 years?

Am dreading the prospect of having to go through that call centre - any help anyone can offer on here would be awesome - the call centre in the UK I've found good, the one in India can't understand my accent and don't give a monkey's basically.

Please help - the last problem I had with my internet took over a fortnight, and about 8 engineers / 5 appointments to fix - including one contractor who stood looking at my set top box, drawing air in through his teeth and tutt tutting for 20 minutes and then left without fixing anything.

login to your modem http://192.168.100.1/ username root, passwort root and check the event log.

sounds like signal problems

or you could do similar on the set-top-box - go to settings and then "Technical stuff"

just to clear something up first,if an engineer is sent a job he will do his best to get to you in the alotted time slot.;) as to your problems,it does sound like a signal level issue, dont forget engineers have a home/family life as we all do.you can have an appointment of your choice from 8-7 mon to fri,8-4 sat.(and most techs are working sundays just now in most areas) cant you work round this??

I teach - I don't do a job where I can take half a day off to sit around for engineers to come (that have a history of not keeping appointmentments in the past). Unfortunately the nature of my job means that it's nigh-on impossible for me to get time off work for stuff like this - which basically means I'm looking at having to wait another 6 weeks till I can ring up and arrange an appointment.

Like I say last problem took endless appointments to get fixed as well (some of which weren't kept, or weren't booked properly so didn't go through on the system or something).

It's not a situation many people find easy to grasp - that some people are completely tied to their working hours and cannot pick and choose when they take time off work (it's hard enough for medical appointments and stuff), and it's not something I've had any joy in the past asking for help from NTL getting Saturday visits etc.

so you can make time for medical apps(and STUFF) but not time to fix your cable,i know theres no comparison between the two per say,but as a teacher dont you get particularly generous holidays, and as such would be more available than most?? :erm:

No, we get time allowed out for things like medical appointments / hospital etc. I can't somehow see my head booking a day's supply cover for me to wait in for a guy to come and fix my cable.

Like I say - looking at 6 weeks before I get a holiday in order to be able to take time off to get an appointment - which is why I came on here to find out if there were any issues area-wide or whatever before I rang up and got told that I HAVE to have an engineer out - because otherwise I can't get any time out of work until the back-end of July.

NTL have a history with me of promising appointments that don't actually get processed through on the booking system and make it as far as the engineers as well - it's happened 3-4 times to me in the past.

For those of you with kids - how would you feel if your kids came home saying their teacher wasn't in school today because they had to get their cable fixed? Exactly.

Obviously I'm not going to get any help here though - so I guess I won't bother coming back.

Teachers have a responsibility to educating their class. Unlike some of us, during term time, taking time off usually has to be an important otherwise the class timetable suffers. My brothers a teacher, and , taking time off during termtime is usually for something that's otherwise unavoidable. Kids falling behind on "interquartile - ranges" because sir was waiting in for cable/internet man is low on the list.

I think that was the whole point. Members suggesting a Teacher should be comfortable putting their Internet appointment ahead of the classes education are the ones who, IMO were being unfair and IMO owe dizzi an apology.
Teachers are really not given enough respect in this country considering what they do. (The good ones anyway).
It's not uncommon for them to be marking papers and setting assignments well into the evening after they get home.
