Okay, just wondering if anyones had any bad experiences with NTL/VM as regards to bad gaming latencys/pings especially in peak hours and managed to get it fixed? I'm quite aware it's a problem in my area and it's down to high utilization rates or over conjested UBR.

Just basically asking is there ANY way to get them to fix this? i've complained numerous times over the phone etc but it really never gets me anywhere as they all go over the same old scripts, i've also had a technician come out to fit a new cable modem which no suprises didn't solve anything

thanks for any help advice in advance

Sean

Even though I get quite slow download speeds, my pings to UK gameservers are usually excellent, especially on e-frag and Jolt gameservers. I ping usually between 15 and 30ms.

I'll concur - My download has been sinking to as low as 0.5 Mb so downloading is a bit rubbish, conenctivity however is still top notch so gaming is not affected. Pings to jolt and such in london based data centres are totally unaffected, same with euro based servers. Just hope not to need patches or maps ;)

i have to say what you are saying sounds oh so familiar, i have been with virgin/ntl for all most a year now and i have never had a problem.. EVER!!
But since the 20mb upgrades in my area, i can not play counter strike source.. which is very frustrating.... i find that my ping on a local london uk server will be stuck at about the 40-50 constant and it keeps spiking up in to the hundreds. I am in London so thought i would never have a problem

Mcshane123 dunno exactly what issues you are having... but go: START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > COMMAND PROMPT. When in there type: NETSTAT > then wait for a sec....
the when it is done type a local uk site addy in there such as: PING WWW.BBC.CO.UK be sure to leave the space between the PING+WWW (some sites mite be firewalled and not allow you to ping them
lemmie know what sort of averages you get tell me if it spikes or anything like that...
would be interested to know as i have an engineer coming round on tuesday between 12 + 4 in the afternoon, would like some ammo to back up my claim that it aint just me having this issues

Both are too the same UK based gaming servers, i've tried hundreds of different servers from all diff providers and i get the same problem on all of them

Got over the 1000 ping on a few BF servers in the last few days! It was jumping up and then down to 19-30......

Not good as some servers have a max ping set to kick you!
I dont download a lot so i dont know that stands, but even basic web use is bad at night......

mate next door on BT is fine which I hate as he hates VM......

Source and a couple of other games I play run perfectly fine with very low pings on UK servers, and perfectly acceptable pings on european servers. I also get my full downstream of 20mb. Living in a reasonably unpopulated area rocks.

It's down to your area i guess then, cause mine is awful for gaming barely playable

Definitely not the server itself at fault...

A doddgy firewall, or piece of spyware could increase your ping easily by 5 or more.

I think pings also seem to suffer when you go through a router - even if through cable.

I have always had good pings even since the 128k days :) Thats one thing I have always liked about NTL/VM - Never had any problems with gaming from them.

Those pings I did went through 2 of them, one of which was wireless then a further 8 routers in ISP land before reaching the server ;)

A decent router will add negiable time to a ping test. Certainly nothing to make a game unplayable. Sub 1ms, unless it's malfunctioning, or for what ever reason it's working it's **** off.

I don't have a router or anything, and i've tried formatting my computer also my computer works fine on different networks, as it's been tested
