Water Butt

Evening,

Just purchased a water butt but we need some guttering and a pipe of sorts to run into the butt...

We've had a look around the DIY shops but can't find a length of guttering to put on the shed + brackets.

Also - how do we run a pipe into the butt? Somebody suggested a piece of hosepipe but I'm not sure how this would connect to the guttering...

Ideas welcome...

Most DIY shops will sell an adaptor fitting that you connect to a rainwater downpipe. The fitting diverts some of the water flow from the pipe to the hose leading to your butt.

The alternative is simply to stick the downpipe into the top of the butt - but the butt (how many buts?) will overflow that way so you don't want that near your house ;)

OK - well thats half the problem - we need some guttering to pool the water, but there is no down pipe to connect / tap into to siphon the water from - hence the need for a piece of hose or something to run into the butt.

The butt is situated next to the shed - well away from the house - and drain pipes...

Guttering from any decent DIY store (check the Wickes stuff, but B&Q and others will do similar) - the mini guttering would be enough for sheds.

I'm sure you can drill a hole and fit a plastic tap into the butt. On the other hand just dunk your watering can in the top to fill.

OK - I'll check out DIY stores again...

There is a tap already fitted - it's the filling of the butt that's the issue!

Right - we got some mini-guttering from B&Q today - all installed on the shed roof but we still need to sort out how water gets into the butt. At the moment we have a piece of guttering attached to the side of the roof, with a down pipe connection about 3ft above the top of the butt opening so the water just trickles into the top.

What we need is a connection of sorts which down-sizes the 75mm downpipe opening to about 20mm - the size of a piece of hosepipe that we can put into the side of the butt and put the lid on...

So - the challenge for the evening - any ideas?

The GF came up with the idea of using expanding foam to secure the hose in place at the downpipe end - not sure it's waterproof though...

The one's I've used have been waterproof, just check the labelling and it should be alright

If we had a down pipe it would be no problem - we just tap into it - but thats the problem - there is no down pipe available in the location so we need to improvise!

The one's I've used have been waterproof, just check the labelling and it should be alright

May look a little Heath Robinson but how about using a plastic kitchen funnel to channel the water into a down spout. http://www.lakeland.co.uk/SearchResults.aspx?kw=funnel Maybe the easy fill one would work.

Also consider putting another tap about 4" from the top of the barrel. With a hosepipe connected to this you can channel the overflow onto the garden and away from the shed. Mine feeds iinto the garden pond so at least the fish are happy when it rains a lot.:D
