I have to emphasize fully that donwloading is only way to truly varify a persons correct speed, Caroline.

http://www.speedtest.net seems the standard if you want such a misleading reading of a users line.

On the issue of results... a 10mb line should say something near the 9000kbps mark.

To verify what pacakge your equipment is 'set' to operate at you can check your modem's config.

Click on

http://192.168.100.1

and enter 'root' for both username and password. Navigate through the menus (they differ from model to model) for download and upload rates, they'll be there somewhere.

For 20Mb, it will say something along the lines of Maximum downstream data rate: 20480000bps.

That's your download frequency, a different parameter to the one you wanted to see really. You should keep searching that config page for downstream/download rate.

I suspect you are on 20Mb now as Herts got done over the last 2 days judging by the posts on here.

Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1

Red = information required to tell your connection rate, this is an example of 20Mb.

http://192.168.100.1/CmOpConfig.asp should take you to the right place...
