That's right at the moment I'm getting this...

Thu, 31 May 2007 21:01:26 GMT

1st 512K took 27625 ms = 18.5 KB/sec, approx 152 Kbps, 0.15 Mbps
2nd 512K took 11687 ms = 43.8 KB/sec, approx 361 Kbps, 0.35 Mbps
3rd 512K took 12563 ms = 40.8 KB/sec, approx 336 Kbps, 0.33 Mbps
4th 512K took 9812 ms = 52.2 KB/sec, approx 430 Kbps, 0.42 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 320 Kbps, 0.31 Mbps

My connection is supposedly 10mb (when it works) so now I'm going to bed to only set my alarm for the wee earlier hours just so I can use the Internet for what i want, mainly gaming.

Blueyonder was awesome for gaming, now it's just well crap.

good night.

Have you phoned customer services?

myriauk

many many times.

"I've reported that for you to our network team"
"Hmm I can sympathize for you there, that speed is incorrect"
"It's too many people accessing the network"

I've heard it all and quite frankly I'm ****ed off about it. Tomorrow I'm re-phoning to either get the bill reduced from £37/month to £8.88/month for 3 months while all of this network/country/whatever upgrade is going out.

With service like that mate I would cancel and move on.

Don't trust speed tests - they are not reliable at all.

Download a file from somewhere that you know can provide your maximum download bandwidth.

I agree 100%

Ive just checked speedtest.net and the site is getting battered, got 1mb from the maidenhead server and 2MB from Dublin.

Whereas im getting 2.3MB/s :) from usenet (giganews) best speed test ever!

Also try changing proxies.

If i dont specify a particular proxy in my IE settings i get the following.

Thu, 31 May 2007 22:06:32 UTC

1st 512K took 687 ms = 745.3 KB/sec, approx 6141 Kbps, 6 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 6688 Kbps, 6.53 Mbps

HOWEVER if i use the Luton 12 Proxy I get this.

That's kinda weird cos, like, VM don't use proxy servers any more.

I get variation just by using <click here>

Actually Proxies are still on in some areas.

I don't believe it, there's me moaning about the speeds being about 6-7Mb/sec during peak times (including now!), just turned on the Peterborough cache-1 proxy in my settings and its now maxing out 20mb/sec!!

Cheers for the heads up guys :)

How do you do this proxy stuff? I'd love to give it a go.

Doesn't matter, I just sussed it and it made no difference to anything. I'm gutted about the speeds from newshosting, still only get 10mb. I even tried giganews with 20 connections which only got up to 12mb. I look forward to getting my new modem and trying that out, hopefully it'll make a difference, I currently have an NTL 120 thing.

Blueyonder was awesome for gaming, now it's just well crap.

Not sure what proxies have to do with gaming so sending this chap around on a proxy hunt is a bit silly.

Also there's the minor issue that Blueyonder haven't used proxies in years, and this hasn't changed with merger so transparent caching being broken is unlikely to be a cause of the slow speeds either.

VM have said his local network is oversubscribed and there's nothing that can be done about that apart from VM either reducing the number of people sharing the bandwidth or increasing the bandwith available :(

Proxies are VM local cache of webpages so the page only travels across the VM network to your home, if you visit for example bbc.co.uk/Goggle etc. the cache will be 90% up to date. However if you go to an unusual webpage the cache may not have it, so the proxy servers gets the page, and then sends it to your computer.

As with games the data changes all the time, so proxies won’t help at all !

Only web (http port 80) and DNS are redirected through proxies and only in some ex-ntl areas. All other traffic goes direct.

Not on the Blueyonder network unless explicitly specified.

Wait, proxy traffic only covers port 80, direct FTP downloads do not go through proxies, I think that is a coincidence.

Comparing downloads from various mirror sites is the only reliable test of your modem speed.
