Not according to what I've been reading! So where have you read this?

Virginia was one of the 13 original states and declared itself a Commonwealth in 1776. Shortly afterwards Pennsylvania and Massachusetts followed suit. Kentucky was originally a county of Virginia and became a Commonwealth in 1792.

gazzae
29-05-2007, 13:29
They are still states though... for example..

The Commonwealth of Kentucky is a state located in the East Central United States, normally included in the group of Southern states, but sometimes included, geographically and culturally, in the Midwest. Kentucky is one of four U.S. states established as a commonwealth.

Exactly so there are 50 states.

Just because some call themselves Commonwealths doesn't make a difference. They are States.

They have state police, state flags....
