1)What, specifically, is your issue?

My download package is 4Mb and i only get 300KB/s maximum. This has happened for quite a while now it seems as though my upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb was not properly successful since 256KB/s is 2Mb. * I know for a fact im paying for 4Mb*

2) Do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation?

No

3) Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say?

Try removing your router and trying there - same issue. Try to boot into safe mode with networking - same issue. Turning off firewall and anti-virus - same issue.

4) What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? (aka: if you haven't tried to help yourself, why should *we* help you?)

Rebooting the modem leaving it off for 5-10 second then putting it back in. Not using the router. And trying both LAN ports available on my motherboard

5 Who you are and what you have
a) Where in the country are you?
Nottingham, East Midlands
b) What is your operating system?
Windows XP Professional
c) What is your home network setup?
Buffalo Router with AOSS encryption. Running with 1 Wired, 2 Wireless one being a PC and the other my Wii.
d) If you have more than one computer (off most of the time), is the problem occuring on all other machines?
Yes
e) Are you running a firewall of any sort? Have you ever installed one? Did you try to turn it off during troubleshooting?
Virgin Media asked me to do so - same problem.
f) Please supply a traceroute from you to www.bbc.co.uk in text format

Try adjusting your Max Transfer Unit value (MTU)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283165

Do it on your PC first without the router and see what you get... remember to reboot.

Onestop showed me as 3.15Mbps download and 354 kbps upload.

Two seconds later I got:

Tue, 29 May 2007 00:11:27 UTC

1st 512K took 471 ms = 1087 KB/sec, approx 8957 Kbps, 8.75 Mbps
2nd 512K took 430 ms = 1190.7 KB/sec, approx 9811 Kbps, 9.58 Mbps
3rd 512K took 451 ms = 1135.3 KB/sec, approx 9355 Kbps, 9.14 Mbps
4th 512K took 410 ms = 1248.8 KB/sec, approx 10290 Kbps, 10.05 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9603 Kbps, 9.38 Mbps

From the Speed Test up there^^^^

I know which one I'd tend to believe...

Is the speed poor all the time or is it worse at certain times during the day?
Have you checked your modem's own pages for downstream received power and SNR?

Could you please do this:

ping -n 100 www.bbc.co.uk

Supply just the last few lines showing Ping Statistics etc please.

Don't bother messing with MTU, your pings are high and there was some loss there which won't be due to MTU.

Ta.

Is it the 100 120 or the 200 as there has been known problems with the 100 and 120 :) What is the downstream power level and the upstream level and the snr

shadowdogg
29-05-2007, 23:46
its ntl 120

using another speed test place:
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/05/34.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

if the snr thing is the http://192.168.100.1/ thing then i have this:

Downstream Receive Power Level : -0.71 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.90 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 50.00 dBmv

Downstream Frequency : 402750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : 256 QAM
Downstream Receive Power Level : -0.75 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.85 dB

Upstream Frequency : 37500000 Hz
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 50.00 dBmv

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000 bps

thanks for the help btw

Your levels are within tollerance. Can you post the data rate bit on the config page?

Do speed test www.speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net) again but choose the France Roubaix as the server. get https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/05/33.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Try downloading TCP optimiser http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe

Slide the bar up to your max download speed (eg 4mb) then select "optimise" when it asks you to restart do so. See if that helps.

Hey,

I rang up VM and they said they need to connect me to another server but have to do it when many people aren't on. He said between 12 and 4... is that 12am/pm or what? Surely he cant mean 12 at night?

Guys,

I Just joined yesterday but seem to be getting mixed results when it comes to speed. I have the 10 meg package but most speed tests return 150-250kbps. I used the www.giganews.com speedtest because when I used to be with bulldog it would show my download speeds at 7500kbps which isn't bad for an 8 meg line. Y then is my download speed so low with virgin.

The tech guy told me to try http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ which just returned 9509kbps but I don't believe it, previously it was 8500kbps.

My usenet connection will not go past 250kb/s when on bulldog it was at 750kb/s This is what I use most and may have to cancel virgin if this is the norm but I have read other posts where people are connecting at 950kb/s

I have included some of the modem settings.

Acquire a Downstream Channel 586750000 Hz
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 3
Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM64
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : -9.1 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 28.3 dB
Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 1600
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Modem Capability : Concatenation Enabled, Fragametation Enabled, PHS Disabled

Being a noob to cable is there anything else you guys require. Turned off firewall and antivirus. only the supplied modem connected a NTL250

I have 7 days to cancel so hopefully I can sort it out before then.

Cheers

From what i gather there has been some major issues with the entire network recently and they are trying to get to the cause - thats why there doing the traffic management.

I would suggest ringing them up and to get them to connect you to another server so the guytold me.

The VM guy said 347KB/s is fine but I don't think it is, if im on 4Mb i should be getting 512KB/s not loosing 200 odd KB/s
