I have just upgaded to the 10mb speed soon to be 20mb. I have a Linksys BEFSR41 router, will this router run at these speeds.

I had a brfsr41 v2 and at best it could only manage 6meg on a 10meg connection. The cpu in the router could not handle the data rate, so I went out and bought a wrt54gl wireless router, I now get 9meg and the gl version can also take custom firmware like dd-wrt witch gives you extra features. If you are thinking of upgrading though do some research first !

I had to upgrade the BEFSR41 when I got 4mbit. As the above comment says, the CPU is rather limited.

I have the same router, as im only on 4mb i guess there is no reason to upgrade at the moment, but surely if the router can transfer data across a network at full speed 100mb then the reletivly easy task of transfering data from the wan port at speeds upto 20mb should be acheived as well?

I read somewhere once that most WAN ports on home network equipment unly run at 10mb, whilst the lan ports are at 100mb.

This would explain what the connection gets throttled i guess :)

as i stated above i can confirm that version 3 of this router can handle the 20MB speed as seen below.

1st 512K took 302 ms = 1695.4 KB/sec, approx 13970 Kbps, 13.64 Mbps
2nd 512K took 213 ms = 2403.8 KB/sec, approx 19807 Kbps, 19.34 Mbps
3rd 512K took 232 ms = 2206.9 KB/sec, approx 18185 Kbps, 17.76 Mbps
4th 512K took 236 ms = 2169.5 KB/sec, approx 17877 Kbps, 17.46 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 17460 Kbps, 17.05 Mbps

I'd go out and buy something like a wrt54g/s you can find them quite cheap if you look around. If you do like techman said, load dd-wrt on or some other custom firmware.

My Linksys BEFSR41 router will only allows speeds of around 8mb, but removed from the system I get 18-19.
So. I'm looking at a Linksys WRT54GS.
Any other recommendations ? Not really bothered about Wireless at the moment, but could be handy in the future.
I'm also using the onboard ethernet card on my motherboard. (Abit NF7-S).
Is it worth buying a newer card as I'm not sure when I'll get round to upgrading my system
Looking to 'future proof' it for the Net for at least a couple of years.

Thanks for any info.
