I just built myself a Intel core duo PC and am unable to get the pc online. I keep getting a 169. Ip Address. I think i may need to upgrade the fireware. If this is correct how do i go about doing that?

If thats not the case any ideas what it can be?

Thanks in advance

Erm no you don't. Have you powered off the modem since you changed all your hardware? Also is it ethernet or USB connection?

if you are gettinga constant 169.ip via both usb & ethernet, it is either a windows issue, or the connection is down.

Call tech support, they'd be able to confirm what is going on.

Hi, have you tried booting into safe mode with networking?

yea tried safe mode. The modem works fine on the old pc. Are you guys sure its not the firmware?

I had to upgrade allot off driver for my other hardware because its 64bit chip.

If the modem still works fine on the old pc, then the issue will be with the new pc, not the firmware on the modem.

Did you install the manufacturers drivers for the network card, or the default windows drivers?

same question for the usb, did you install the drivers from the motherboard cd?

I installed motherboard driver for ethernet and download the drivers from the web. The proper drivers for the USB.

no there isn't. And no you don't need one. you are completely off the beaten track thinking it is a problem with the modem firmware.

Power off your modem and then unscrew the coax cable. Connect it up to the pc using ethernet and then power it back on. If it still gives a 192ip then power down the modem, replace the coax and power it back on. When it has locked onto the signal, refresh the connection on the pc (either by rebooting or repairing the connection).

Xp 64

Having had a little Google around, it could well be that your NIC is not 64bit compatible.

:(

Or, hopefully, that you require 64bit drivers for your NIC.

You getting any flags in Device Manager?

Brand new or not, you've already said that you built it, did you mix and match old and new components? Are you 100% sure that your NIC [ethernet] card is 64-bit compatible? Because everything seems to be pointing to the NIC/drivers being the problem....

USB is not deemed to be a practical route either.

You might want to check your CAT-5/e/6 cable while you're at it....

Can't you have so many IP's assigned, i get a 169. address with one of my other computers, yet it works hard wired to the router, and the modem directly connected to the laptop and other pc and router, i get different IP addresses all the time, but the same for each one plugged in,
e.g. laptop 86.2.3.4 (get that the same time i use the laptop) PC1 say i get 86.3.4.5 i get that all the time, if you see where im coming from?
Tech support said i can only authorize five ip addresses or something, dunno if this is true tho,
might be the prob if you plugged the modem into so many pc's or routers?

might be a silly suggestion, but all suggestions are worth it!
Have you enabled the onboard LAN in the BIOS, also, under the USB section of the BIOS, select the most ports u can have (I think it may be 8) and make sure they are set to HiSpeed, as this is the fastest (480Mbps)
