Over the last 3-4 months I've had the VM engineer out 5 times!
4 times for slow internet access (I'm on 10mbit). I've been experiencing speeds between 2-5mbit on a regular basis.
I'm not a heavy downloader but like to get the speed i'm paying for! The thing that really p*sses me off is that when the engineer comes out, they feed some crap and manage to get the speed running at 10mbit.
It usually lasts for a few days and then drops back down to a crap speed!
I've finally reached breaking point when an engineer came yesterday and said I was on 2mbit and he would "sort it out". However he seemed shocked when I told him that I could access the config file and it stated 10mbit.
Apparently, customers shouldn't access the modem as it could void their contract!! After he tried to tell me some more b*ll****, I told him my job was a web designer and had a good knowledge of all things IT related. He still tried to blag me even more LOL
To cut a long story short, he like many before him had the connect running at 10mbit, so i thanked him and sent him on his way!!!
Switched the PC on this morning and get what....... 2mbit speeds!!!!!
But every cloud has a silver lining, I just noticed that Sky are doing some great deals for the Sky+ package! Anyone know what the upload speed is on their 16mbit connection??

Fair enough.
I hope you find sky BB an improvement.
Last time I tried ADSL I found it to be a nightmare. Lets just hope you have a better experience.
Perhaps you will let us know how you get on once it is all set up.

Mick, I don't want to leave but VM are taking the p*ss. I'm being mislead by someone, somewhere. I don't see Sky as the holy grail but i've had experience of their TV package before and it was better than my current experience with V+. If I get speeds of more than 2mbit for their Internet package it would be an improvement on what I'm experiencing!

Once you get a stable ADSL speed your sorted, it does sepend on your line though and nothing can be done about that.
Sky+ is great though, welcome to a true digital tv service.

One of our neighbours just switched from BT BB to Sky...... her speeds are now a quarter of what they were. Guess who is going down there tomorrow to look at it ;)

Hehe don't expect 16MB speeds on Sky Broadband. It all depends how close you are to the exchange. I am 2.3KM from my BT exchange and we got 4MB/s tops. You can only get 16MB/s if you are on the exchanges doorstep.
Plus Sky's customer services are just as bad as Virgins. I really don't like virgin with all their bull****, but its unfortunate and extremely saddening that they are the most reliable at the minute.
We are less than 1Km from the exchange by road or straight line. I still wouldn't move to ADSL as the lines in our area are old, badly maintained and look like they haven't seen a BT engineer in a number of years.

tell them you want a new modem and a lower price on your bill or else you will leave. that will sort it out

I also get the slow speed's here far to often now. I am on the 10mb but seem to get around 4mb most of the day. I only notice it running at full speed late at night. I assume that its the amount of people in my area on the connection.
Here is my point exactly. I have not used my internet all day long until now when typing this message and this is what speed I am getting and I am on the 10mb line.

1st 512K took 766 ms = 668.4 KB/sec, approx 5508 Kbps, 5.38 Mbps
2nd 512K took 766 ms = 668.4 KB/sec, approx 5508 Kbps, 5.38 Mbps
3rd 512K took 812 ms = 630.5 KB/sec, approx 5195 Kbps, 5.07 Mbps
4th 512K took 797 ms = 642.4 KB/sec, approx 5293 Kbps, 5.17 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 5376 Kbps, 5.25 Mbps
Seems to happen everyday almost - Very annoying. I am getting my internet through my set-top samsung box. I know it can hadle the speed cause I have seen it running at full 10mb but its usually late at night like I have said.

I understood that you needed a separate cable modem for 10 Mbps as the STB wouldn't do. Certainly a colleague at work got a cable modem when he upgraded to 10 Mbps recently. I should give CS a call icestar2.

I dont understand though because I have seen it running at 10mb at certain time. Are you sure about the set-top box not being able to run it ? I am 100% I have gotten 10mb at certain times. Maybe thats the problem though it cant run in 24/7 ? Will give CS a call and check but when they switched me to 10mb they didnt say I would need a new modem. Thanks for the advice anyway :)
I think the quality of Sky Broadband is probably reflected in the price.
Also if you are not ADSL2 ready i.e. your exchange and link. Then you anit going to get anywhere near 16Mb are you? Because as far as I’m aware ADSL Max can only do 8Mb if you live 30inches away from the exchange.
do you have virgin tv as well?

My local exchange is ADSL2 enabled that's what makes the decision easier. I rebooted modem this morning and still 2mbit speeds down but 512k up???
I've decided as my area is due to be upgrade to 20mbit during June I'll wait and see if that offers better speeds. If not, then I'm off! I can get a similar deal through Sky for £10 a month less - never thought that would happen but it seems Sky are finally raising the bar!

I dont think that is ALWAYS the case!
Just ask the people paying £37 for "20mb" and get 2mb if they're lucky! [VM]
Or ask the people paying £10 for "16mb" getting 12mb. [Sky]
Not saying Sky are perfect, but neither are VM lol.....;)

oppps
weird thing is even if his line is not ADSL2 and has a chance of 8mb line then (s)he will still get better speeds than (s)he is getting with VM at this time.
I have 10MB conection and past 4 week my download speed has been 117KBps i have phoned CS up and got no help at all and i am sick of the indi call centers.
typical indi call ceter
you have spyware---NO i dont
your modem is broken----NO it works fine
your network card is broken----lol just lol
your computer is set up wrong---I build them for a living
I will send you a engineer---(CLICK) hang up
Now my next door neighbour has BT and is 1.5 kilometers from exchange and pays £18.99 a month and she gets average of 5mb gratnted she is lucky but my point is i pay 37 a month and get speeds of 1mb to 2mb and no matter how much i complain to VM nothing seems to be done.
SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-10240-384 ---- one day that config may be right
we will call you back---no one does
we will send someone out---day of work and no one comes
we have no record of it---ntl CS at it's best
rinse/repeat

Your right its not always the case
I pay for 4mb and get 4mb im happy, if I was not happy I would vote with my feet and go.
All i want is for VM to post on there web sit what the hell is going wrong with so many ereas not to have there CS team lie to us all the time and DUMP the bad india lines.
The way VM are going they will loose alot of people to Sky/BT/BE they seem to be on the fast track to suicide.
I love cable i have loved it for the past 10 years but this is getting beyond a joke now.

Started the PC this morning and getting 2-3 M/Bs. So that's 2 days 10 M/Bs and 2 days between 2-3 M/Bs. Where is all the bandwith going???

Maybe this new super duper 20mb connection requires Virgin to syphon of the bandwidth from everyone else ;)

Sorry to but in but I am having the same problems with my 10mb BB from VM. Only mine is that I get 9.4 mb in the morning (when I am usually at work) but this drops to about 2 mb in the afternoon.
Rang VMCS who said we will send an engineer out to look at my modem and computer. Tried explain the concept that if it worked fine in the morning how could it be my modem or computer? That it had to be to many people using the cable in the afternoon and it had to there fault.
He then went on to explain that they run a fair usage policy and I should expect a drop in service in the afternoon. He could not understand my disappointment that this drop was 80% (I think).
I think this is unacceptable. If you bought a pound of grapes in a shop and they gave you 3oz's I think you will be disappointed. I know that BB is a litle more technical but to advertise 10mb and then give 2mb has to be unethical if not ilegal (there rant over thanks for listening!)

After a day of 10 M/bs I'm back down to between 2-3 M/bs. It's one day on and one day off at the moment. I wonder if VM are doing this on purpose!!!
