been a while scince i posted, had problems with speed scince i upgraded to 10 meg and still its ongoing.my modem has been configured to 20 meg, yet according to tech support its not available in my area yet (folkestone kent) so i am still on 10 meg my upload speed is allways around 700 but download is so eratic its ridiculous anything from half a meg to 6 meg max, when i was on the phone to support last night i tried downloading from msn and it was'nt even downloadining kb/s it was on bytes a 71meg file was going to take 22 hours to download! i am on the phone to virgin now every other night and this problem is in week 6 now, i have had 3 engineers out new modem, done every test imaginable. the last engineer said he didnt have a clue and it must be a problem further up the network, and rang a clolleauge who would be comin out later that day or the day after, that was 2 weeks ago and no sign of him yet, so i have another engineer booked for this thursday, i have requested evening as this is when it gets worse.
any ideas on what to do would be appreciated, 6 weeks ago i didnt even know what upload and download was, so i need all the help i can get

Ran the usual virus scans etc to count that theory out?

Checked your signal levels etc http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/26006-cable-modem-signal-levels.html

Your downstream receive power level seems very low.Wait for 1 of the Techy installer types to spot this thread to clarify that;)

Wed, 16 May 2007 07:56:17 UTC

1st 512K took 250 ms = 2048 KB/sec, approx 16876 Kbps, 16.48 Mbps
2nd 512K took 280 ms = 1828.6 KB/sec, approx 15068 Kbps, 14.71 Mbps
3rd 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps

update. my 20 meg connection according to a speedtest was running fine for 2 days, when i downloaded games from msn to check it was at 1.7MB/s now i am back to the usual 200KB/s to 600KB/s yet if i do a speedtest it tells me i am at 16meg, please could someone shed some light on this before i spend my usual hour on the phone to them.

Speedtests are not a reliable way to find out your connection speed.
Because a lot of sites can't supply a 20meg feed and most of VM routes are congested and dropping packets a single slotted download is not a reliable indicator either.
The solution is a multislotted download from a source that can definitely provide the required bandwidth and that will accept the number of slots required to max out your connection. :)
Example: At the moment I am finding I need 22 slots to max out my 10meg from Easynews. The routes to and from are disgustingly poor. :Yikes: I doubt my box could run enough simultaneous slots to max out 20meg. :(

Hmmm under those circustances that's a tall order. :)
Get FDM from here: http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm
That will take care of the slots. Now you need to find some sites that can supply 20meg downloads. Off the top of my head, what about XP SP2 from mickysoft.

nice one i shall ry it when i get home from work, ta for the advice:)

ive done the download manager and all is running fine, the problems i have are trying to host on my 360, any more than 6 people and it lags, when friends on different isp and with 2 meg can do it fine! can anyone tell me how to do a traceroute/ping thingy lol as it may be that apparently, and if anyone knows how to ping rainbow 6 vegas that would be suuuuperb.

Start/Run/Type in CMD/enter either TRACERT or PING followed by a SPACE then the ADDRESS either in the form of a URL or an IP.

thanks mick, i will try this when i get home. lost the plot with virgin last night as download speeds dropped to 200k again at 6 o'clock and have been assured this has now been passed up to different people who will sort it in 48hrs and i will have no more problems ever!, due to the fact that i have had 3 engineers out in the last month and been on the phone to them every other night for the last 8 weeks, seems you have to get to a certain level of complaining before they do anything, if it does get fixed that is.

mart18
23-05-2007, 23:42
fnny you should say that dafry, i got told 3-4 weeks as the problem ahs been arose with the manager, accordin the the engineer we had again, he said they have recieved loads of complaints of low speed and stuff, they said it ws due to the upgrade, and i said it was no different to before, and he was like well yeah...

dafry
24-05-2007, 18:18
yep the guy on the phone said there was a glitch in the system scince the upgrade, oh well my 48 hrs is up tommoro, we'll see.
