Brighton, just queued up a 400mb file in grabit from usenetsever and was wondering why the slow speed, so done a speed test from up top and getting:

Sat, 12 May 2007 14:22:26 UTC

1st 512K took 1860 ms = 275.3 KB/sec, approx 2268 Kbps, 2.21 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1296 ms = 395.1 KB/sec, approx 3256 Kbps, 3.18 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1125 ms = 455.1 KB/sec, approx 3750 Kbps, 3.66 Mbps
4th 512K took 1110 ms = 461.3 KB/sec, approx 3801 Kbps, 3.71 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3269 Kbps, 3.19 Mbps
To repeat this test from the source server click here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.marsden/newspeedtest.html?1178979753609).

really don't know why i'm paying for a 10meg service TBH, yet if i downgrade it wouldn't suit my needs (family of 5).

Anyone else in brighton with bad speeds today?

Am having problems too still...

Have tried downloading from Giganews, mirrorservice.org, microsoft.com, etc... all give me ½ of what I used to get until this month.

Here's what I get downloading from MS
Download Failed (1)

Gonna phone 'em again tomorrow, but I've already phoned 'em several times and been told several different stories. If it wasn't for this site and realising I'm not alone, I'd be considering switching.

Thank god I'm not the only one getting speeds like this.

I've phoned faults, the best they could do to sort the problem was put me through to customer services and recommend I get some compensation. Which I did - 2 months of broadband bill refunded, plus phone and tv package upgrade for free (now on VIP pack with V+ box for nothing extra per month).

The problem still remains though, that my broadband service is pitiful.

Typical speedtest, without traffic shaping incurred:

1st 512K took 5531 ms = 92.6 KB/sec, approx 763 Kbps, 0.75 Mbps
2nd 512K took 6969 ms = 73.5 KB/sec, approx 606 Kbps, 0.59 Mbps
3rd 512K took 8203 ms = 62.4 KB/sec, approx 514 Kbps, 0.5 Mbps
4th 512K took 8344 ms = 61.4 KB/sec, approx 506 Kbps, 0.49 Mbps

'services' where does it say that, because unless the modem config is a 10Mbps config, it would matter what the billing says etc. Just an idea as this sort of things happen. :)

Thought it might be a traffic shape, but then I *did* get traffic shaped yesterday and it went down to 0.75MB!!! Grr.

Gave up on waiting on the phone yesterday, however, today 151 says problems in the BN1 area to be fixed by 3pm (Hey! Just in time for Traffic Shaping to kick in again!).

Not as bad as some folk here, but I hate it when I have to cross my fingers just to get what I'm paying for.... hmph.

Exactly the same. I asked if it was likely I had the same piece of spyware on every PC I have tried and if it was also present on both Linux and Windows as I again have tested both. The answer I got was "It isn't the line or the modem so it must be spyware".

You're lucky they said it was something plausable (spyware). For me, they said my modem had caught the equivilent of a 24 hour bug, in that it keeps breaking down (which is why I get 0.5Mb) and then corrects itself in the night by around 3am when I can get the full 10Mb. Absolutely ridiculous some of the stuff they come up with.
