Speedtest sites can often be unreliable - I've demonstrated this is the picture below. Both were/are running at completely different times.
SpeedTest websites only normally send small amounts of data, like 512KB/s at a time, maybe a few times. and then try to figure out an average of them. You would be better off taking speedtests from multiple websites and figuring out the average from them yourself. Don't forget, physical distance can affect the speed you get aswell.

the first one is in megabits a second and 1.21 mbs translates to 1239 kbps
they are unreliable tho as they are subject to problems outside of the control of Virgin. Do they provide a central speedtest site like BT?

You're getting your measurements wrong.
Read the very bottom of the broadband max one.

There is a speedtest link on this website which is hosted on a users NTL account. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php
It uses NTL servers to send and receive the data. But that of course has its only problems. You are accessing NTL servers so while results may be fine for traffic to and from NTL servers, there may be problems reaching servers outside of that. Though it is a good place to start troubleshooting problems I think. As there may be a problem directly between you and NTL.

I was just waiting for somebody to say that. There are eight bits to the byte, so therefore 1.21mB/s is equal to 9.68mbit/s. The Speedtest site claims I'm able to download at around 1.2mb/s. Big difference.

Oh, indeed.
I was really just informing those of you who perhaps didn't know, (Truthfully, most of you do) that speedtest sites can be unreliable.
I didn't fall for it. Do I win a prize?

1st 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps
2nd 512K took 202 ms = 2534.7 KB/sec, approx 20886 Kbps, 20.4 Mbps
3rd 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps
4th 512K took 234 ms = 2188 KB/sec, approx 18029 Kbps, 17.61 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 20120 Kbps, 19.65 Mbps

God ive been saying this for ages and like a broken record im finding myself having to say it again. Use a download tool like reget and connect to a site that allows multi threaded downloads and set this high in your manager . Download a large file and it should if you carefully choose your source hit your max speed available.
What is your obsession with speed tests man???
Speed tests are rubbish, the way to measure speed is best done by downloading large files from a server which has high bandwith to provide fast downloads.

Why people use Speedtest sites is beyond me. There are better ones out there than those crappy flashy ones anyway. They look good, but thats all. Eye candy. 9/10 they give wrong readings.
I don't need them though. My news client reports daily my max speed ;)
