ok,

So I have a bit of a problem and thought I would post here as a last resort before I have no choice but to cancel my broadband. I will try and explain it the best I can and if anyone has any suggestions or may have some idea's I would be very grateful!

So here goes!!!

I am on VM 20 Mb broadband. The speed is great and I am massively impressed with it, however I seem to be having a stability problem with what appears is my connection.

I do some trading on a site called www.betfair.com which is basically a betting exchange. Rather than connect to their exchange using there website I use a piece of software that connects through to their api via a secure connection. This is significantly faster than the website and it is the speed and frequency of the connection to the betfair api that allows me to basically trade and make some profit. All this is fairly straightforward I hope up to now but here is where the problems start! I have a specific problem with connecting continuously with the betfair api. What the software does is download the market information every 200 m/s. If I use my VM connection I can connect initially and download the information 3-4 times. Then I get a 10-15 second timeout where nothing happens. Then I get some more market information another 3-4 times then I get nothing for 10-15 seconds. This happens constantly and as a result I cannot use the exchange.

I have tried 2 computers on my VM connection and both have the same problem. One of them is my macbook pro that is dual booted and just runs windows and has a 1.3 (i think?) core duo and a gig of ram so there is no hardware issues. If i go next door and use my neighbours bt broadband I have no connection problems whatsoever. I also go to local internet cafe's to use the software and I have no problems with the connection there.

I have also tried running the same software at my friends house who is on VM around the corner and had exactly the same intermittent connection problem.

For people who think it mat be a software specific issue, I have also tried 3 other pieces of software that do a similar thing connecting to the betfair api and have had the same intermittent problem. It is not the normal connection as I have run dan ellwells broadband speed tes as well as several others and it has come through fine.

Using the software I use I can also change some connection modes. I can connect directly with the betfair website and doing this I have no connection problem, however some of the functionality of the software can only run using the api. After doing some research I have found that the api uses a https connection as oppossed to the http connection through the website, so I think it is a specific problem connecting to https sites.

I have contacted technical support but they refuse to help when I mention software connection and blame my pc or the software. I know the software and the pc work fine as it is an established piece of software that I use regularly on other connections and I can use it fine next door!!!

The disconnections department just keep crediting my account with £10 and asking me to keep calling the technical helpdesk!!!

It seems no one is able to either point out what could be wrong or has any ideas! I have changed proxy server and tried every one on the list but it hasn't worked. Whether or not this is because the https doesn't go through the proxxies or not I'm not sure I have read conflicting reports on here that say they don't touch the proxxies anyway and some that say they do.

I'm really at a dead end with it all as I don't know what else I can try?

Any pointers or advice will be greatly received!!!!

If I leave it running on my VM connection I get around 20-30 timeouts an hour every hour but I have never had one on any other connection?????? it just appears to be on the https connection though????

hmm.

when you are using the mac, are you running it in windows mode? can you get similar software for a mac?

What type of cable modem do you have?

Are you running any other programmes that are using your connection when the problems occur?

are you connecting directly to the modem? via usb or ethernet? or are you using a router?

also, go to http://192.169.100.1 (username and password both root) and post the signal levels from your modem. (nb don't post the mac address)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for replying!

I am at work but will post the modem stats when I get in. As for the other questions

To be consistent I unplug my router and plug the ethernet cable straight into my mac. My mac is running Bootcamp (i.e. Dual Booted) and so the only thing I am running is windows and the one program I am using to download the betfair market prices.

I will post my modem model and modem signal levels when I get home later.

does a tracert to www.betfair.com or whatever the API host is give you any clue as to where the timeouts could be happening?

could be a peering issue between ntl and them
