I'd be grateful for any suggestions...

I've just returned from three days away and discovered that I can't call up my own site (billyfury.com) or the host (ixwebhosting.com).

I called their support in the States, who say everything is fine their end, and there must be some issue with NTL.

The latest auto-notification for new messages on my message board is three days old, although ixwebhosting tell me new messages were posted today, which indicates to me that the problem is several days old.

I have no idea where to start.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Working here, are you specifying a proxy at all?

Websites works OK here on ex-NTL connection.

Are you using a proxy? Can you get FTP access at all?

Top site by the way. Love Billy Fury ;)

*edit* Damn beaten to it again lol

cant connect here as well :( I posted earlier I can't connect to

www.sipgate.co.uk as well, other sites that are effected are

www.betfair.com and all the ones in the sipgate thread I cant connect to either. If you try going thru a proxy you can connect (I have the following proxy setup in firefox 195.175.37.6:8080 & it connected straight away)

By the way I am in Cleethorpes, DN35

interesting, didn't work for me, at first, then I manually set a Bromley proxy & it worked, but doesn't work with proxy set to 'none' - but that may be related to the local problems we are having here.

cronically slow to access then times out with me.

Like ned said though I am not the best to ask as Grimsby verrry slow. Some websites you can make a cupper come back and it still has not finished.

Ned just has not replaced the valves in the 56k server yet.

Your site is working and your PHPBB does indeed have posts as recent as 7th May 07. Judging by your location you may be falling victim to the net gremlins which are plaguing nottingham/lincoln and the surrounding sticks.

Am using ixwebhosting.com myself incidently, and they appear to have lost all my database :rofl:But that's another story.

Many thanks for all of this input.

No, I've no FTP access either.

Worked ok here (Notts). Sometimes ISP's can have issues with data to/from the US.

Have you thought about getting a UK based web space provider?

Have you thought about getting a UK based web space provider?

I've had UK providers. The last one was 34sp, which became more and more expensive as traffic mounted.

To be fair to ixwebhosting, this is the first real problem I've had in a year, and subject to guidance from those more knowledgeable than I, it doesn't seem to be their fault.

It costs me £50 a year for 500Gb of space, 3,500Gb of monthly data transfer, 100 mySQL databases, six domains hosted, and three domains provided free.

Although their e-mail support staff seem to be Russian, they also have an 800 phone support number staffed by Americans, which means I can call and speak to a real person free of charge in the States on Skype.

If it works (and it generally does) it's difficult to argue with it.

For the moment though, it seems to be broke at Virgin's end, so I'll be giving them a call soon.

---------- Post added at 13:28 ---------- Previous post was at 12:47 ----------

I've just got someone in Virgin tech support who says he's looked it up and it's a "non-existent" domain.

As I can actually access the site now from work, I don't understand how he's produced that result.

it puts the so called free VM webspace without its even allowing a CGI bin in perspective, it always puzzled me why they exNTL/VM )dont give you good generic DVD+ sized webspace with your own binarys dir as its internal to them and so saves external bandwidth etc, it would be so easy to house custom slax CD/DVD's and pressumably if they stop useing/adding that internal VM traffic to your total traffic quota in peak times, then people might start using it for every VM users benefit...

Just fine using cpc2-brmb4-0-0-cust***.bagu.cable.ntl.com

i ment to ask elswere, all the baguley UBR's doesnt seem to match other area's UBR nameing, why is that ?,and how do you know your real UBR your connected too?, does that 'cust***' identify you as much as your MAC does too, and if so how come they use different single user/customer identifying naming on that part of the whole UK network?, is it also a case of VM using a virtual UBR and not a real one or something ?.

Dunno if it's been mentioned, or I'm teaching egg sucking, but the *s in your tracert can mean either the device is not there, OR it's there but configured not to respond to pings.

Hope that helps.

You can't compete with the price and pacakges you get from US based providors compared to that of UK based ones. Combined with the exchange rate you just cant get a better deal in the UK.
