Woeful speeds here in NE London. Rock-solid for years, but the last few days our 4Mb connection manages 200-300kb only. What's going on -- looks like some serious problems on the network?

That's not a "serious problem". For the last 5 months I've been getting <100KB/s on 10Mb.

Think I'd have given up on them after five months, unless you're getting it for free!

Well I have rung them every day this week and the only answer I have got is "we are busy...hangs up" so the only way I can get in touch with them is by not paying the bill... that soon gets them on the phone.

i'm just down the road from you (Grangetown), speeds are fine after midnight till around 3pm then varies from 0.5 to 3meg.

Browsing for me is fine with no slow downs, changing the MTU may help with your problem.

When I was a student in Roath it was exactly the same - always having problems from NTL over subcribing from students housing containing 6 people all wanting to p2p. Soon as the summer came ultra low pings and full speeds - guess what, no students.

I don't think altering my MTU value will make any difference - its been working perfectly fine up untill recently, and my laptop is used on various networks of slower speeds (4mb, 2mb etc...) and pages are much more responsive.

When I go home and use the internet, Opera is saying (sending request to server) for about 10 seconds or so. Ok, so the servers I go to could well be busy, but then I've tried just going to random google searches and its the same. Internet explorer and firxfox both exhibit the same symptons but don't tell me exactly what the problem is, whereby opera does.

It's not an opera issue, as again it's working fine on different connections.

The only thing I haven't done is to change the dns entries to something different. Are they sitll 194.168.8.100 and 194.168.4.100 (have these values in my head). If something doesn't change in the next couple of days I'll be contacting support, as something isn't right with my connection dispite having above average speeds.

I do dread calling support, as I'll know they'll just blaim my machine and get me to pretty much destroy my configuration of cookies, hostory etc... in a vaine attempt to dislodge the blame. I don't denie the possibitly of a misconfigured machine but I've done considerable testing to knwo it's not espically now as I type is fast as hell on a 2mbp business line.

I'm very tempted to go to dsl but it'll mean being stuck in a contract over the phone line, plus the initial setup costs. I do wish VM would stop changing so much of the service. £2 increase, speed increases (yeah right!) & connection capping all within a month. Pffft VM can go **** themselves in all honestly.

Just done that, they didn't manage to shift the blame. They tried a new tactic I'd not heard before - "There's a server outage in your area that started 16 minutes ago". Weird that, considering this problem has been going on for months and I've been on the phone 40 minutes already.

If I was you, and well I'm not all that far off in terms of the quailty of service I'd stick it out for the summer and then look at what it's like with the speed limiting back when they return, but atleast by then you'll have had chance to find a better offer.

I just can't but help think for £37.99 there's got to be better service, even if the rated speeds aren't as fast.

But I do find there are a lot of lags when loading pages particularly Google Analytics where site often hang for ages. I also experience a lot of Connecting to delays with quite common pages like Google.

Unfortunately, there is nothing reassuring about virgin (note that I no longer honour them with capitals), customer support say that speed is ok and it clearly is not. They boast about highest speeds on their Website and, yes, I can get 10 Mb first thing in the morning. Otherwise my evening speeds are dreadful (except that I am retaining an ADSL line in parallel for the time being and am on a 50% discount).

I am looking to raise with OFT the question as to whether they should be allowed to maintain their cable licence in my area of Walthamstow - my opinion is that they are worse than useless and the nearest promise of anything positive is Haringey (perhaps that includes London E17, God knows!!!)- 20 Mb roll-out - no date confirmed .

I've had similar probs for months on a 4MB link getting <150kB. I've been told that the Cardiff UBR1 (Cable5/1 upstream) interfaces are 85% utilized and need either upgrading or a new node installed.
Everyone who gets bad speeds should ring in EVERY day and complain so it benefits VM to spend the money and upgrade the network. Consumer pressure is the only way.
I cannot imagine how they think they are going to deliver 20MB when they cannot deliver 4MB. In fact I believe they know they cant but are going to sign people up for it anyway to prevent them going to BT or Sky. They assume (correctly) that people will just moan and groan but not switch in the hope of "jam tomorrow"
