I use Comodo firewall. It's free, has good reviews and seems fairly effective.

Check your setting's first - Also webpages may be slow while your antivirus is updating.

I use the ful norton firewall and antivirus. I pay a year subscription for that - They charge like £50 on there website but you can find it much cheaper elsewere. I got my year subscription for 17.99 which to me seem fair enough for the job it does.

I think theres an antivirus called nod32 - Lots of good reveiws for this one. I would say look around and see what suits your needs best.

Sorry, no disrespect to you or NIS, but IMO and I used it before I got 'netucated' and NIS is a big hog of resources and it can and does, slow down, stop, and generally fool around, with your net. As you've mentioned NOD32 is IMHO the AV of choice, small resource, updates are regular, multi-daily at times, of course then all you need, now that you have a proper AV is a decent FW, Zone Alarm free should suffice.

nod32 is brilliant does the job very well has all one could require watches email, net use, office use, file use, and updats very regular sometimes can be annoyingin its updates seems to pick when ya busy elsewhere but in all i'd give it 9/10 marks

as for firewall at moment currently using windows one [the anti-virus seems to pick up most other things]

another vote for nod32, i'm also just using windows firewall along with the router's firewall. i ran some online security tests to see if my system was protected and all tests passed successfully.

NOD32 http://www.eset.com/
and
softperfect firewall. http://www.softperfect.com/products/firewall/

Or go the whole hog and get Linux, such as zenwalk Linux http://www.zenwalk.org/

Fully agree with NOD32.

A simply superb AV product, and although you have to pay for it, my second year subscription is half of what I paid the previous year.

It's footprint is one of the smallest I have seen for an active AV program, and it rates as one of the highest quality AV products out there.

If you have XP, try rebooting into Safe mode with networking, and see if the pages load quicker then. If they do, then it could be either your AV or firewall.

Also, make sure you are not specifying a proxy in your browser, that could be the cause of the problem.

Note to self: Must find another l337 AV, because NOD32 is becoming too popular! :D

Yes I have heard good and bad reviews about NIS but for me its always done the job its need to so am happy with it at present. If it started to cause me to much trouble then I would consider changing.

I've been sufering slow webpages and web lock-ups (although FTP and e-mail OK at these times) - and I use NIS.

Have switched away from NTL DNS to OpenDNS - and web access is now much quicker (with no lock-ups).
