Hello :D

I released my ip via my Linksys wrt54g wireless router and turned off the modem over night (a good 10 hours), however when i turned it back on i got the same IP. So my question is, how long does it have to be off to get a new IP address?

Welcome to the forum

What modem do you Have?

If it is a NTL:250 I've read here change from Ethernet to USB can change the IP.

But you really should use Ethernet.

Change the MAC of the router and it should be very quick ;) Why do you need to change IP address?

Do you get the old one when you change back?

I changed the MAC using the clone MAC address (changing some values slightly) thing but when i do the internet just dies and doesnt recover (loses all connection and doesnt reconnect till i revert to default MAC of router) Unless im doing that wrong?

Using NTL 250 modem.

Also i need to change because in a game I play, i was banned as a joke by newbie admin who doesnt have the power to unban! :S and the owner is on holiday for a month.

1. Release ip on router
2. Unplug CM
3. Renew ip on router
4. Plug CM back in, wait till sync and ready lights are static
5. Release and renew ip on router

Did you power off the modem, power of the router, power off the PC and then power up the modem, wait for lights to lock, power up router, wait again, power up the PC?
I'm always a bit warey of these "banned as a joke" threads though ;)

Keeps giving me same IP.

Tried it a dozen times :S

I usually turn modem off, go to sleep, wake back up and get a new IP.

My modem connected to a router which has custom firmware on it, when I want to change IP address I just go into web interface, create random MAC for the router than boot cable modem and the router :) and voila! IP changed in matter of seconds :)

However, generally, the modem DOES need to be rebooted to pick up an IP.
