maybe the £2 has been taken coz VM charge 1 month in advance? So u are paying for next months BBi now, and the cost of that is £2 more? seem right?

I am saying the speeds are "meant" to be from 1st May. U pay one month in advance. So assuming u paid on 1st April [not true probably, but just assume], so u are paying for the next month, who's speeds are 20mb!

If u remember correctly u must also have been charged when u didnt have a service when u first got ntl, since on the first bill they take the first 2 months service charges. Didnt complain then did ya about having to pay for month 2 for a service which u hadnt yet recd:dozey:

I am not a cable fanboy, but it makes sense ONLY IF EVERY1 got upgraded around the 1st May/when ur next month starts for billing. [or B4 1st May ofcourse :D]

I think it's been mentioned before, but the £2 you are paying isn't actually associated with the upgrade. The upgrade is free, and is only being released now to stop complaints. =)

Well if VM think they are doing their customers a favour by upgrading them to 20mb, then they can think again! £37 for 10mb would just mean the demise of VM. LoL, hu in the right mind would pay that, when it would be CHEAPER to get a £11 phoneline from BT and get £24 bethere BBi, costing £35, for 24mb down and 1.3mb up! Yes if u live in the remote places in the UK then cable is ur best bet for good speeds, but a lot of people arent really affected by "distance to exchange", so even if i get 18mb with bethere, i would have a SECOND foneline, and a HIGHER UPLOAD!

Hex
24-04-2007, 17:06
but a lot of people arent really affected by "distance to exchange"

But I'm pretty sure there are a lot more people affected than not. My local exchange is not exactly a long way away, about 0.8km/0.5miles away following the roads, but it's been suggested to me by some apparently ADSL tech savvy people that the best I could hope for out of an 8mb package is 5-6mb So I imagine it cant bode much better for a 24mb package.
But that's based on my rather limited knowledge of ADSL

True. BE Broadband do have some brilliant offers, and their customer reviews seem good, but this is cable. Cable SHOULD be the service we've all dreamed of. We SHOULD all be getting what we pay for. All speeds SHOULD be steady and consistent throughout the day regardless of what time it is.

The infrastructure in America is more developed, and they don't generally pay as much as we do for the equivalent service. I'd imagine their speeds are pretty consistent with all the competition. Now that there is only one cable provider in the UK, services aren't what they may have once been. ADSL is virtually a dead technology, as in a few years it simply won't have the capacity to keep up with cable technology. This is when you'll start seeing cable companies forming, and competition arising. Granted, at the moment, 24mb BE broadband si safely ahead of the competition, but by the end of this year, Virgin intends on making 50mb/s the standard. This does sound like an impossible feat, though. At least without a lot of throttling being imposed on those who even use the service to its full potential.

Wouldnt suprise any of us considering VM/NTL's Upload track record now would it :td:

Sirpingalot
24-04-2007, 17:38
Most likely xD. 50mbit/s down, and 5mbit/s upload would be nice.

Hex
24-04-2007, 17:46
In order to even download at 50mb you would need 1.25mb upload bandwith available to support tcp reply data packets. Looking at NTL's track record, they always seem to provide 256k above the bare minimum (10mb needs 256k, you get 512k. 20mb needs 512k, you'll be getting 768k) So it stands to unfortunate reason that you'll probably only get 1.5mb up with the 50mb package.

This is all speculation of course.

Druchii
24-04-2007, 17:48
1920kbps up would be the 50Mb tier going on their previous track record.

10 down, 384 up
20 down, 768 up
50 down, 1920 up

A 50Mb package would only suit me for the upload, sick of having to do back-ups to CD (small back-ups) and losing them :( 600Mb takes too long to up at 44.5kBps average. Whereas, at 240kBps up it might actually be bearable. 43mins ish?

Nothing in Oxford yet..

I was just wondering, for people that remember the 10MB upgrades and earlier... i think on every upgrade someone posted a link to an NTL page that let you change the tier of service you were on yourself.

In the case of 10MB, the page got updated early - and some people changed there service on this page and the modem restarted and came back online with the 10mb config file.

Does such a page still exist? and has anyone checked to see if the 20MB speed selector is on there. I dont think it was a well published page, possibly it was used by NTL internally - the address was an IP address and then /tierselect or something.

Cant remember

EDIT - dont worry, found the page. https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi/cabletier

Dont work though :(

If you're talking about the network maintenance listed on the status pages. Don't hold your breath, all that means is there is work being carried out in your area. The chances of this being a 20mb roll-out are slim to none.

1st 128K took 110 ms = 1191564 Bytes/sec = approx 9914 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 94 ms = 1394383 Bytes/sec = approx 11601 kbits/sec

More than happy with these results. If I do get an upgrade, will an NTL 250 SACM be up to it?

I was on the phone with customer services today and they said the little silver ntl 120 would do 20Mbs.

I was not convinced but they insisted. They will get an earfull if they ask me to pay for a new one.

ntl120 will only do 10meg max, i've got a new one comming throught the post for free next week for self install that will cope with 20meg (i know someone at VM who has arranged it for free )

Mart, when you say having to use the Bromley proxy how do you set this up?

Im in Bromley and getting about 12-13?

cheers

:erm: In IE proxy settings, under connections it sould say 'Proxy Server' in LAN settings, You can't miss it :) and just add the proxy there, seems to work for me

Probably true, but the fact that others have found themselves on the 20mb before the 1st has given me, and a lot of others hope.

im currently on a 10mb broadband with virgin i ran a speed test from http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/
and my results have been looking quite poorly getting
Download Speed: 3646 kbps (455.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 486 kbps (60.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
does anyone know the reason. i think my upload is ok but wen i download something it goes 1 - 1.1mbs
can someone explain to me the probs thanks

When you download at a high speed, or upload at full whack, the other channel will suffer.

You will also find, at the moment atleast, that between 4pm and midnight, if you max out your download too long, your speed will get cut in half for approx 2 hours.. there are other threads about all this on the forum.

Don't trust speedtest sites, no matter how reliable it may be for others. Just run a download from the Virgin mirror site. You should be achieving around 800KByte/s to 1200KByte/s. Don't worry if you aren't; multiple other factors can compromise your speeds.
