I've previously had 10mb on this modem. Ive asked to go onto 10 mb once again after a couple of months at 4mb. They say this is not possible. Was at luck the first time ?? or do i really need a new modem (virgin have arranged for a 255? to be installed)

Virgin really don't have a clue.

it certainly wont hurt to have the new modem anyway :) specially seeing as 10 meg will be doubling to 20 very soon

Since the QAM 256 upgrade you,ll not get 10 meg thru this modem. You,ll need a new Virgin 255.Make sure you have a network card in your pc thou!!

SB5100 <up to 30MB>
SB5101E<up to 30MB>
SB4100 <up to 30MB>
SB4200 <up to 30MB>
SB4300 <No Such Modem>
SB3100 <only up to 8mb>

Please do not quote me on this as im not 100% sure if the info i have above is correct but .. after looking @ the motorola website i noticed most of them can cope with 30 mb max..

if you have the SB3100 <only up to 8mb> or the SA Webstar EPC 2100 Firmware Version 1 <only upto to 8mb> .. you will need a modem replacement to get 10 / 20MB.

Hope this helps

I had 10mb for a month and got 9.5mb from Astraweb down my 4100, that's when the shaping didn't cock it up of course!

Thank you all for your replies, typo in my behalf, i have an SB4100. So i assume it no longer works due to the change in QAM. That's fair enough :)

38mb down if i remember correctly, in a good wind, in the middle of summer, with 14 birds chirping and the ice cream van on the 4th road of your estate.

In other words, it was stated as going upto 38mbps, but only on network types it could handle properly, and if it can't handle 256QAM, then it's not going to hit 38mbps.

Today my modem has decided it wants to go up to 10mb. Typical ! The engineer is due to come in just over an hour. Do you think i should upgrade in light of the 20mb upgrade ?
