You are 350 miles away but that should not effect it too much i am less than 150 miles away from the same server in sheffield and mine comes in about 9920kbps every speed test

When i ping Dublin which is closer, i get about 6Mb...

im less than 50 miles... still maxing out 2mb

If you notice the ping its maxed some server along the way is causing this.Mr A have you tried different speed tests?

run a tracert to somewhere like www.bbc.co.uk (http://www.bbc.co.uk) to see if there is a local problem ie in your internal network . You may not get a problem at all meaning your route there is sound. That would then simply mean there is a problem somewhere else and nothing to do with your connection

May I make a suggestion with regard to your use of speed testers, namely that they are not the most accurate way of determining your actual speed. The best way (in reality) is to download a very large file. Click on this link:

http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/battlefield1942/demo/win32/

and select: bf1942_sp_demo.zip (which is 133Mb) download the file and make a note of the transfer speed, I (on average) achieve (around) 800Kbs (maintained throughout the download) which for a 10meg connection is pretty good. If (on the other hand) I was getting around half that (400-500Kbs) then I would be ringing 151. Try other files further up the directory tree and see what you "actually" get.

Speed testers don't "work" the system hard enough to get an accurate result.

Check it out.

^^^ isnt even accurate if you were to run a multi threaded download tool and the host server supports multiple connections all things being equal you should achieve full bandwidth

I always get 1.2MB using newsgroups and decent fpt/http servers.

So the speedtest seems pretty accurate to me...

your torrenting thats why its low speed, depends on where are the seeders in the world and how many leechers n shizzle.

try downloading itunes from apple and see what speed u get then.

@TheOne, what settings are you using to get that dload speed on utorrent?

Default settings will achieve that, the secret of good speed in my opinion on Bit Torrent is to use Private Trackers.

Hi all - new here but old to problems with NTL. I cancelled my phone and TV with them when they couldn't tell me why my TV concked out every Saturday night. Maybe they were trying to tell me something. When they offered me a cheaper service to stay I replied "Making it cheaper just makes it cheap crap, no thanks."

I stuck with them for the broadband, seeing as BTs' 8 Meg turned out to be scraping 2mb if I was lucky.

Not had any bother with broadband apart from the usual outages/maintenance crap (I'm on 10mb. I've always been on whatever the fastest speed NTL offered, expected to go onto 20mb but now...?), download at 1.2 meg/second etc.

Since this weekend surfing has been a complete pain. Waiting for web sites to load? Eh? Downloads? Slow?

Today I tested the speed on speedtest.

3.7 kb/sec

Yep, 3.7 k/b sec download. Upload was in the 400's or so.

Got onto tech service, only to find it's outsourced to India now, and they seem to think that to get their point through they need to shout down the phone at you.

Since spending ages on the phone trying to understand what they were saying, and resetting this, safe mode that, nothing else running, going through the modem not a router etc, I pretty much gave up.

I am downloading the Battlefield 2 demo as above at 180 KB/sec so at least it's speed up from earlier, but I got no joy from customer services. Is there anything I can do to reset the modem (does leaving it off for a few hours give a new IP address, will that do anything?) or give me back the speed I had? Is it just a 'glitch' or are the last few days shape of things to come? If so they can stick their 20mb up their ****.

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9614/crapspeedkr9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

That's from a supposed '10 MB' connection that was good before the weekend, and now is crap, and has stayed crap. Checked the service status page, nothing there, rung customer services, waste of time, couldn't understand what they said a lot of the time and then they started shouting at me thinking I would understand it better, so I shouted back. Ridiculous.

Am in Leeds. Has anyone else had any problems in this area?

I'll turn my modem off completely and check the speed again tommorrow, and ring CS again, after that if no joy I'm ditching this lot, had enough. Nnnngh!

I am in NW Leeds on 4Mb - running as normal (4mb).

Good luck.

a good help

lol

..
(if its a sacm)
i would firstly do a ping test to say google and see what loss you have, then cal customer services, i would suggest the modem PSU is faulty.

Well, mine's been pants in the evening for the last few weeks. It used to be rock solid @ 4mb. These days, I'm lucky to get 2 meg in the evening. Tonight is particularly poor:

1st 512K took 3141 ms = 163 KB/sec, approx 1343 Kbps, 1.31 Mbps
2nd 512K took 4703 ms = 108.9 KB/sec, approx 897 Kbps, 0.88 Mbps
3rd 512K took 3828 ms = 133.8 KB/sec, approx 1103 Kbps, 1.08 Mbps
4th 512K took 2672 ms = 191.6 KB/sec, approx 1579 Kbps, 1.54 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1231 Kbps, 1.2 Mbps

Great... During the day I get close to 4meg so I suppose it must be congestion. It did get congested rather suddenly though. I never had any problems until a month ago.

That's the Virgin effect. :Yikes: Everyone is signing up in droves, just wait for the speed upgrade and you will be lucky to get a connection. :erm:

I today upgraded to 10mb today, i asked them if they had any deals as i want to trial it. They gave me 3 months at half price. I phoned about an hour ago...

My speedtests are still registering that im connected to the 4mb service.
I rung them up, they told me that it takes 24-48hrs to complete the upgrade. When ive upgraded/downgraded in the past it was instant.
I dont feel too confident that it will happen in the next 48hrs.. speaking to an 'international' call centre didnt really boost that confidence.

Guys, if you have your own problems with connections, can you please create your own threads. With many people reporting problems in one thread, it becomes hard to keep track of them, and makes the thread hard to follow. We do have members here, who may be in a position to help, but they almost certainly won't if the thread is too hard to follow.

Also, we have enough speed test threads, please don't just post speed test results in this one. It is not helpful to the OP to know your connection is fine when his is clearly having problems.
