Hey all wonder if anyone can help me, been a telewest customer since the beginning had almost zero problems with there service, but now virgin have taken over its all gone to pot.... Im on the 10 meg service & up until 3 months ago I could use newshosting for downloads maxing my connection and getting roughly 1250-1300 kb/s, tried using it since the takeover im now lucky to get 400kb/s, generally getting 200 kb/s. Ive done speedtests which seem to be showing near enough 10 meg but its not reflected in my downloads. From what I can see newshosting can have problems with people connecting from ntl servers so I just want to know if theres anyway I can determine if my problem is virgin broadband or newshostings service. I tried contacting newshostings support, they advised me to do a tracer route, I tried changing ports etc, they advised me virgin/blueyonder have started doing something called "traffic shaping" which seems odd to me, esp as I rarely download anything or could be considered a heavy internet hitter.... as I had read in some other posts here I checked out my modem on 192.168.100.1 the log results looked off to me so I called tech support who were no help whatsoever and the callcentre which I think might be in India advised me that my log is showing fine on there end, heres the log results.

I had exactly the same problem on newshosting and there tech support were about as useful as a chocolate teapot, did a bit of searching about and i wasnt the only one having problems with newshosting. I cancelled my account with them and went on to newsdemon and have had zero problems ever since full speed on my 10mb and there support department are on the ball..

:welcome: to the forum. We've had a few reports from newshosting users about slow speeds. Every time, when contacted, newhosting support blame Virgin (sometims traffic shaping, sometime bad routing). Which is why I personally find it rather odd that when I was on NTL broadband, I had no problem with download speeds on either Easynews or Giganews.

I precommend you switch news supplier.

If Virgin are shaping the OP's area, from what I have been told, the shaping used does not use the port number, so changing port would have no effect.

The problem is not with Virgin.
The problem is with Newshosting.

I subscribed to Newshosting years ago, but the service gradually got worse and worse, having to use 20 connections to max out my 10MB connection, Authentication errors, so i ditched it.

Signed up to Giganews and must say it is THE BEST Newsgroup provider, and I know ive used them all.

Full speed here on just 3 connections (1.18MB/s)

Do yourself a favour if you can afford it, sign up to Giganews, you WONT regret it, especially with 100 days retention on binaries ;) also like to add they offer SSL Encryption if needed ;)

Oh they have lots of Linux ISOs as well :)

but if it is just bad routing then you wil lseea diffrence, it doesnt hurt to try

I'm on Newshosting too and get about 400 kb/s with the default 8 connections. All I do is bump it up to 16 or 20 connections until it maxes out. I know Newshosting don't like this, but if they want they can bin my account and I'll be off to Usenetserver instead. I'm certain the problem is with them and not VM.

The reason I'm not changing just yet, is that I'm out of the country for a while soon and will be getting rid of NH then - and I could really do without the hassle of changing for just a short period of time.

Just like VM it would seem that some news providers are now using the cheapest (and of course most congested) routes available in an effort to maximise their profits at the users expense.

Easynews, once a leading and respected provider, has gone down this route and nowadays (from my location) requires between 10 and 20 connections (depending on the time of day) to maximise a 10 meg connection.

Although Easynews make no restriction on the number of connections, make no extra charge for SSL and have (in my experience) a first class CS I am afraid I could not recommend them because of their present pathetically slow speeds. :td:

I am with Astraweb and get a good connection with them. I'm also on the 20mbit trial and get 18mbit download rate off Astraweb. It is all very good for only like £8 a month it is a bargin.

I would like to add I have got 40MB speeds from Giganews from a dedicated server and Giga wanted to go even faster, the server connection was the limiting factor not Giganews ;)

not suprising really then if you got capped is it if you are downloading the entire contents of the newsgroups, your not a customer they need

Because you sell what u download ;):P

Im sure a few people have noticed the terrible speeds from giganews with virginmedia just lately, sometimes getting stuck in the 100kb/s range....and giganews blame vm, vm blame giga....getting mighty ****ed off with vm now as they refuse to do anything about the awful speeds i've experienced just lately (last few weeks), sites not loading, downloads horribly slow (http, ftp, ngs)

it's become more than a ****take since they became vm, my service has gone down hill.

was a little joke because everyone always implies you do with how much u down ;).

Area fckup? hmm, nope, done shedloads of tests both my side, vm's side, had engineers out (hell, next door neighbour is ex vm engineer and he is experiencing the same problems and swears blinds trafficshaping has now kicked in)

which i would believe to be true as speeds start at a solid 1.2mb/s then within 10mins of downloading it shoots down...and down....and down...and nothing fixes it unless i leave the connection for a good 20mins.

Now, i live in a quiet area and only a few have bb here...and none are heavy downloaders and it's not my pc, so wtf is going off?

im getting sick of it, really annoying me, no wonder everyone rings up to get a deal, i dont see why i should pay full price anymore for a service im not getting and i dread to think what it will be like when 20mbit rolls out.

NTL was good, but the rebrand to vm...pure hell

so what in the hell can you download 300gig in 3 days? your talking 2TB in a month and you are telling me that you use all the "data" you download?

so it says it is unlimted, you end up costing them money so why would they want you as a customer?

well i havent noticed any slow downs with giganews nor has a mate and hes on 10meg and gets near enough 9meg all the time, so i doubt its a giganews issue

With Newshosting atm and I have had really bad connections. might add I am on 10mb. Signed up to Giganews, still on thier trial. Download the same files NH gave me between 798 and 500kbs. Switched connection to GN and got max speed. Both connections were left for 10 mins to settle.
Case proven I think.
