Hi guys - Just upgraded from the 2mb to the 10mb unlimited service (4 hours ago) - managed to get around 620kb/s MAX on binary usenet downloads - but doing countless speed tests it says 1.8 mb/ps - can anyone decode my mystery ? anywhere i can reliably check my speed or will this upgarde take some time?
many thanks in advance

You could check you're speed by using the Speed Test on this website...

I have just done this and may other test (its 6:45pm) and indeed got about the same as yourself - about 4-5Mbit, which seems to be normal around this time of day. I would suggest you try the same test after 10pm or later and you will notice how the speed will shoot up.

In case your Wondering - If you has switched to 4mbit - you would have got 4mbit on any speed test or download no matter what time of day.

EDIT:- SpeedTests (tried 3) all came in at 4-5Mbit but D/L a Linux Iso from UK Site using FlashGet gave as per Screen shot. I noticed something while Grabbing this, it picked upt to 10mbit but after about 10% was done, went down to 4mbit. I Paused it for a while, restarted and again got to 10mbit - if that's not traffic Shaping I'll eat my Hat lol.

Mauldor

There is a Few Factors which can determine the max speed, list in random order:

Cable Modem (Firmware / Network Port / USB)
The Speed of your Router Wan Port
The Net itself - they might be getting hammered or limited in speed.
The connection itselfFor example, I have a SB4100 - this can handle 10mbit as it has 10/100 WAN Port and has the firmware to match. The Router (LinkSys) has a 10/100 port also and this is connected to the rest of my network at 1Gbit. Depending oh where or what I grab, depends on the speed result (Also time of day).

A Better test then the speed gubbins is to go find a UK Mirror Site, use a download Manager (Such as Flashget which is free) and grab a Linux Iso. Even though my Speed Test read 4Mbit the Download from this came as per the Screen Shot as the full 10mbit.

Hi

I thought I'd make a contribution as well!

I've upgraded to 10mb after a long time on 4mb. 4mb was at least reliable and I got 3.6-3.8mb on average at any time of the day. After my upgrade, I've waited for it to settle, and doing tests at all times of day and night using the following sites, its between 2 and 6.8mb. downstream and 300-476kpbs upstream. Nowhere near 10mb.

www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk
www.speedtest.net
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/speedtest.html

I have had 3 engineers, 2 modem swapouts and several calls to BB tech support, who still cannot figure out why my speeds are so random since my upgrade.

I did read somewhere that Virgin were "traffic shaping" from 4pm-midnight mon-fri, but come on, I pay good money to get near 10mb speeds. If I had known that it was not going to be as good my solid 4mb, I wouldn't have changed. But before you say, I just haven't had the time to sit in the queue to talk to someone who just doesn't know what they are doing and thinks that all Virgin customers are not tech savvy.

novacrsh
27-03-2007, 22:51
well im simply not paying the extra for somthing that was solid before my upgrade!!! therefore my 10mb is infact around 4-5mb!!! simply not good enough! hope there are some techies out there that can shed some light!!!

That says you are on 10Mb download & .5Mb upload

How are you connecting the modem to the PC?

Ideally you shold use the Ethernet conection.

If i understand correctly you have a ethernet/usb converter?

Use ethernet, if the PC hasn't got one buy one there less than £10

my modem is sat downstairs - i connect the ethernet to ethernet on the dlan duo (which passes throught the electricity socket - to upstairs) which is then USB from the dlan to USB PC - dlan uses the houses electricity supply to pass internet around the house capacity is 82mbps.
When i initialy setup NTL broadband - Ethernet was not working so had to go the USB route

Hope this helps

speedtest.net seems to get hammered, especially London. I regularly get much slower speeds for London that Dublin or Paris.

Try a download from a virginmedia.com server. This is a reasonably good test of the local link. Then try a big download from another well mirrored server.

Mains net like wireless will not get anywhere close to 82Mb. I think I read that the new 200Mb stuff gets to around 70Mb real data. The speed is also shared for all devices on the net.
Also make sure that the power units are straight into mains and there is no smoother/surge stuff between.

Hi guys - I hope someone here can help me, because I'm tearing my hair out chunk by chunk over here!

A week ago we had the VM "XL" (10Mbit) connection setup, but it's not performing to anywhere close to that. In fact, most of the time it isn't even reaching 1Mbit. I got rid of my EXTREMELY badly supported Bulldog ADSL connection for this one, and so far I'm REALLY regretting it.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/03/5.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

I've had similar results from several different servers on Speedtest and have tried the other tests mentioned on previous pages, as well as monitoring my downloads manually. The only variation appears to be when it first connects - I sometimes get up to 3.5 down and .4 up for a minute or so then, before it dies again.

I've checked the 250 modem settings and I'm set for 10 down and .5 up. Is there some connection setting I don't know about, or is VM just ripping me off unashamedly?! I'm connecting via the Intel Pro1000 Ethernet port on my pc.

Someone PLEASE HELP!! I orgered this connection SPECIFICALLY to stand a chance of getting Glastonbury tickets this year (on Sunday 9am) but at the moment I might as well sell my tent!

Much obliged...

Been getting terrible speed for over a month now, slowly dropping throughout the day to around .2mb in evening.
I phoned support about 3 weeks ago and was asked to remove the router, disable Zonealarm and finally restart in safe mode, told there wasn't a problem and it must be my end.
I phoned again Monday night already in safemode to save time, the guy was thorough and very helpfull. tested and said the fault was obviously on the network and booked an engineer for this morning.
He then put me through to retentions and told me to say as I have been receiving a discounted service I should get a discount. Retentions wiped the £35 that was outstanding and gave me 6 months at half price as way of an apology.

Engineer checked the cable and said he would contact someone else who would call me later in the day.
Just received the call from the tech and it seems the UBR(I think) is struggling to cope and an upgrade is needed. take about 3 weeks.
So I still have to suffer this for weeks.

Crush..

There s a big problem with UBRs as all the Samsung ,V+ boxes and the modems all use the ubrs .Its a common problem around the country i know they are looking at bringing in another freq to help but i dont know how long this will take :)

Hi all

Im kinda new to all this and need some help. I had an engineer arrive today and replace an old modem with a new Virgin Media NTL250 because I was getting about 4Mbs and no more while on the 10Mbps service.

Now when I run the 3 recomended speed tests i get difrerent results (see below) can anyone help by explaining this?
I would also point out that Usenet download is about 4Mbps

Any help would be great

Thanks

There s a big problem with UBRs as all the Samsung ,V+ boxes and the modems all use the ubrs .Its a common problem around the country i know they are looking at bringing in another freq to help but i dont know how long this will take :)

ohh, the STB's use the same UBR's as your ntl250 modems plugged into ?, they dont even use a seperate one, thats means potentially the same ubr card is processing say the VOD your other half is using at the time while your serving your 360 game?, is that what your saying Ned?.:(

people will never be happy whatever speed they get...

Up until about Xmas I would get a constant 7mb, never got the 10mb but was quite happy with the situation.
But how the hell am I supposed to be happy with an ever decreasing DL speed. As for the letter I received last Friday about upping to 20mb yes that would be great, but remember they're offering not me demanding.
And in the light of the current situation I don't see it happening anytime soon..
