Chart Track says approximately 165,000 PlayStation 3s were sold in console's first two days on market in UK, second-best regional debut only to PSP.

I'm really supprised by this, the number of people that have said they didn't want one, i am really supprised that the 360 or the Wii didn't totally wipe the floor with the sales.

and how many are on ebay being/trying to be sold at the moment then ;)

It is a bit strange, particularly when you take into account the amount of stores that still had them available for pre-order all the way up to launch date - there were a fair few stores when you could just walk in and get one

Still, fair play to them :)

Yep, credit where credit's due... congrats to Sony.

One could argue that they achieved this because they had sufficient numbers in stock, whereas the Wii and 360 had limited supplies - as demonstrated by the fact that these other consoles sold out completely on launch day (105,000 Wiis and 70,000 360s), whereas the PS3 is still in stock at retailers over the weekend (165,000 sold from stock of 300,000).

Conversely, you could argue that the Wii and 360 both launched before Xmas, so demand would always be higher than an Easter launch... plus the fact that the 360 launched without any real competition.

As has been said before, it's total sales over a sustained period that will be an interesting yardstick.

Yup, spot on. Too many factors to make predictions, lets all have the debate in 5 years.

Seen quite a few on eBay that don't seem to be selling. But, as you say, an Easter launch, plus more stock means no extortionate prices on eBay

There is alot of factors, but i thought it was worth posting...

As some have said, its an easter launch, which instantly lowers demand, then theres the cost that lowers demand, then theres the price of the 360 thats lowered demand... Infact it's pretty cool what they have managed. There might be some on ebay, but still... the 2 biggest console lanuches belong to sony...

The wii and 360 did not wipe the floor on release because there were not enough of them. The Wii is still outselling the PS3 in America for example because its hard to get one and the demand is still there

Sony have over supplied, hence the incredible early sales figures.

I think I'm right in saying that Sony have shipped the most units, something like 250,000 in the UK, then any other previous console manufacturer.

It makes sense that if the consoles are there to be bought, they'll be bought. If the consoles aren't there to be bought, then they won't be bought!

I noticed on the weekend, a lot of stores had stock of the PS3, but had notices up saying they were out of the Wii's.
Slightly off topic, but there's a few Wii's going on eBay with up to 30 games (shipped from China) and under £200 - seems fishy to me:

They sold 165,000 out of 220,000 available in the UK.

Problem is (pretty much) everyone who wanted one, had got one.

With the Wii and the 360, the churn was there to keep the sales going and going for a couple of months....

the interesting thing will be how they do for the next 6 to 8 weeks.

Remember the Actual biggest selling console is the PSP which sold 185,000 on it's launch weekend....

hows that faring now?

Well, according to Wiki, it's:
Worldwide: 24.70 million units shipped as of December 31, 2006
United States: 9.58+ million
Japan: 6.23+ million
Europe & Australasia: 8.89+ million

Interestingly these figures are trumped all over, esp in Japan, by the Nintendo DS (according to Wiki),

Worldwide: 35.61 million
Japan: 14.43 million
Americas: 10.18 million
Other: 11 million

It's also interesting to note that the PS3 is having a hard time in the States, even compared to the PS2:

Figures from market analyst NPD suggest that Nintendo has taken the upper hand in America's console war, with the two top-selling games machines in February: the DS Lite (with 485,000 units sold) and the Wii (335,000). The six-year-old PlayStation 2 came next, selling 295,000 machines, followed by the Xbox 360 (228,000) and Sony's PlayStation Portable (176,000). Even Nintendo's Game Boy Advance (136,000) sold more units there last month than the new PlayStation 3, which shifted just 127,000. but units shipped means items Sony has moved into warehouse. Not neccessarily items been sold off the shelf...

That could have massive amounts of the console in storage.

Nintendo is the biggest selling console in Japan. As people have said it will be due to the high amount of consoles instock. One of the reasons they probs never sold first day is cause of the price or something. So some people probably waited to see if it was still in stock the next day when they never had to wait outside all lined up.

I think Sony may have broken another new record..... the percentage drop in number of sales between week 1 and week 2 of recorded sales data...

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23977

Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped dramatically on the second week of release in the UK, with official Chart Track figures revealing a fall of 82 per cent.

a little maths says that after Sony's record breaking 165,000 units in 3 days, they sold another 29,700 units in the following 7...

given that last week was the last week in the month, and given a large percentage of people would have got paid, that's FUBAR.

Like everyone said, the large amount of sales were because they were there. Now the sales will plummet just like they did in America.

Sony will spin it and the same stuff will soon be posted on here

"But it sold more in the 2nd week than the 3DO did!" :disturbd:

Its a shame thought - it is a good "games" console.

But Sony ruined it by putting in their Trojan-Horse that is Blu-Ray; as that delayed it and hiked up the price. What this meant is that there was already stuff out there just a capable but cheaper and lets face it, the general public as yet are not that interested in Blu-Ray or any other HD Disc format for that matter.

Now the PS3 is here its not got the same wow factor a next gen console should have so people look at it and say - 425 quid - your having a laugh.

Didn't WII and 360 sales drop by 100% in the second week of sales! :D

I would say that 18% of the launch sales is pretty good, just under a fifth of the launch sales still happening! It is not even Christmas!

Not really, it just re-affirms their status as the 3rd console. The different with the 100% is that the demand was still there. The xbox is still selling a lot and the wii is still selling out as soon as their is new stock.
