Wow, this is blisteringly fast.... :td:

Speedtest.bbmax.co.uk:

Upload Speed: 339 kbps (42.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Forum test:
Wed, 21 Mar 2007 15:05:09 GMT

1st 512K took 4047 ms = 126.5 KB/sec, approx 1042 Kbps, 1.02 Mbps
2nd 512K took 4859 ms = 105.4 KB/sec, approx 868 Kbps, 0.85 Mbps
3rd 512K took 4250 ms = 120.5 KB/sec, approx 993 Kbps, 0.97 Mbps
4th 512K took 4188 ms = 122.3 KB/sec, approx 1008 Kbps, 0.98 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 978 Kbps, 0.96 Mbps

And of course speedtest.net:

Before i was stable at 4Mb down :( On the 4Mb package. I've tried with and without router, restarted the modem and PC, everything i can think of really, and nothing seems to have helped.
Signal etc here:
Frequency 331000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 38.7 dB
Power Level-1.9 dBmV
The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading
Channel ID 3
Frequency 34000000 Hz
Power 46.0 dBmV

Any suggestions?

Thats from Ipswich - working on 4mb(usb). Don't know if that helps at all, but I have read that usb won't go over 5.

I meant any helpful suggestions? In the sense of anything else i could try...

I'm using Ethernet by the way, wired router connections. Everything is pretty much optimal... :(

EDIT: Better...

Afraid you may be holding your breath, the 10Mb service in most parts of the VM network is poor at best and nonexistent at worse, I have tried it 3 times so far this year and always downgrade again within a few days, it's simply not worth the hassle.

The 4Mb service seems to be stable and doesn't suffer too much with the traffic shaping but it's still apparent that VM are expecting people to pay for a service they cannot provide.

What a load of tripe.

Im on 10MB here and have NEVER had a problem with speed at all. (1.18MB/s here)

Sorry to the initial poster, but when people type rubbish like that i feel i need to reply.

Downloading at 10kBps and the connection is struggling again... Weird.

I've noticed that from when I get home from work (around 5pm) I get around 1.5Mbit down. But then, at around the 10pm mark, I start to get more towards 8-9Mbit.

Only noticed it the last 6-8 weeks though. Over subscribed or traffic shaping?

Probably congestion... I'm getting annoyed now, however my latency has improved and Skype seems to skip way way less now as well :)

However i would like my other 9Mb back :( Or at least to appear... We shall see later tonight.

EDIT: This seems like a high amount of errors in 3hours to me....

I don't and very rarely get any probs with 10mb, I get pretty much 1.22mb/sec 24/7, and that again that's in the Ipswich area.

I think i'll give them a call tomorrow, tell them what's going on, see what they can do if anything... It's patchy at best :( Might just go back to 4Mb until this area is upgraded.

Im in the same boat, over the last few months almost every speed test showed that i was maxing on the 4MB service, i upgraded yesterday and now it ranges from 45 kB/s to 601 kB/s but its mainly giving me between 1.5MB-2MB.

Why would the 10MB service be WORSE than the 4MB service?

Let me know what they say when you phone.

Cheers,
Wayne

Opened 4 threads to a HTTP server... Managing to pull down at 500kBps, but have maxed this line now at 1.2mBps :D For about 4 seconds... :(

So, seems like congestion to me, which isn't good, but at least i know what the problem is :/ Maybe when the 20Mb upgrades come along they will upgrade the UBR's here... I'll see on the phone to them tomorrow.

Ive actually just got off the phone with Virgin, ive still got ntl.home 100 cable modem from years ago so i asked if this could be the problem, the lady said it could be. Sent a few signals to the modem, still couldnt get past about 300 kB/s so booked a engineer for between 8am-1pm this friday to give me a new cable modem so hopefully that will solve the problem! Fingers crossed!

Motorola Surfboard 5101E

Should handle upto 38mbps i think it was... But it seems to be having a few errors as posted in my other post earlier.

I'd try and get an engineer to install an NTL:250/255. When you phone tell them you're having huge problems since you upgraded and with any luck they will send a man out. Obviously remove the router before you phone though. :)

Ex-TW area, would that even apply? Next door neighbour installed about 3 weeks ago has a Scientific Atlanta Modem.... Which is puzzling me. Didn't even know they existed.

Definitely a congestion problem :(

Here's a speedtest done just now:
Download Speed: 10184 kbps (1273 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 335 kbps (41.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

And one from the site:
Thu, 22 Mar 2007 00:56:37 UTC

1st 512K took 469 ms = 1091.7 KB/sec, approx 8996 Kbps, 8.79 Mbps
2nd 512K took 453 ms = 1130.2 KB/sec, approx 9313 Kbps, 9.09 Mbps
3rd 512K took 469 ms = 1091.7 KB/sec, approx 8996 Kbps, 8.79 Mbps
4th 512K took 797 ms = 642.4 KB/sec, approx 5293 Kbps, 5.17 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 8150 Kbps, 7.96 Mbps

Just occasionally speed problems can be the result of end users own equipment and in that case all the calls to CS/modem swaps etc. will do zilch.

When I was on 3Meg I had full speed all the time, when I was upgraded to 10Meg the speed was crap, I tried altering the Ethernet settings (10/100 card with Realtek chipset) no improvement, tried another brand new spare card (same make) no improvement.
I also have an on-board Gigabit chip which I use for my LAN so I changed my connection to it, instant stable 10Meg. I went to the shop and got a cheap (yea I'm cheap) Gigabit card (with Realtek chipset) popped it in and I have been on 10Meg ever since.

Now if I hadn't tried to find a problem my end I could be sitting here now moaning about VM's crap infrastructure and getting nowhere, a good question to ask when there are problems is “Is it Me, or is it VM” the answer sometimes is “Meââ €šÂ¬Ã‚. :dozey:

That was probably the rwin and TCP problem tbh mate...

In my case, it's congestion, slow during peak hours, fast during off-peak. :/

Things seem to be a little better today, not dropped below 2mb all day, which i'm glad about, although my modem did give out and die earlier... Sadly. It's working fine again now though :)

Have you phoned CS as the modem dying isn't normal?

I'll give them a call when i get the chance to today, it was late last night so didn't have the chance either... Preparing for visitors.... So tidying/cleaning is #1 priority. :)

Just cheked the next door neighbour who is also on 10Mb... They get 10Mb nearly 95% of the time... Including right now when i can't even get 1Mb.

Probably the modem then, what you could do is plug their modem into your computer and see if you get 10mbit. :)
