Set Top Box or SACM?
Router?
Spyware?
USB or Ethernet?

IF its USB then USB is poo, its slow and uses up more processor power. Go ethernet. if you dont have an ethernet port in your PC add one, it costs just a few quid and takes minutes to install.

Does your modem sit next to a fridge or a fan, a lot of the time having it next to something that generates a large EM field can do this.

What is slow? Speed tests? downloads.

It could be spyware, visit http://www.hitmanpro.nl and run it. IT will automatically download, install, scan and clean using Spybot, Adaware, Spysweeper and all the other major ones. You dont even need to know what your doing, it will just do its thing.

I have a blue NTL 250 modem connected via ethernet direct to the pc, I have Zone alarm firewall and Avast virus scan it have tried it with them off and its still the same

I did a cable forum speed test and it gave me

Thu, 15 Mar 2007 16:53:00 UTC

1st 512K took 2235 ms = 229.1 KB/sec, approx 1888 Kbps, 1.84 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2328 ms = 219.9 KB/sec, approx 1812 Kbps, 1.77 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2328 ms = 219.9 KB/sec, approx 1812 Kbps, 1.77 Mbps
4th 512K took 2359 ms = 217 KB/sec, approx 1788 Kbps, 1.75 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1825 Kbps, 1.78 Mbps

But it's slow with say 60% of websites like it was a 56k modem or slower

Those speeds are about right for a 2Mb connection.

May be your firewall, sometimes you will need to uninstall to check.

Have you tried running any tests in safe mode?

There are known speed issues with ZoneAlarm. They don't go away if you turn it off, you need to uninstall it & reboot.

HOWEVER I don't recommend connecting to the internet without a firewall. Ensure you have an alternative in place before connecting, whether it's the windows XP firewall, a hardware firewall, or some other 3rd party solution

Also won't do any harm to check for viruses & other malware
