My connection was finally fixed yesterday after 8 months of hell. Should I be looking for compensation and if so, what should I be looking at?

Probably a credit for the period during which service was lost, that way you are not out of pocket; anything else you could get would be a bonus.

Assuming things haven't changed then Virgin Media cannot offer compensation, since they offer a non-business service so you should suffer no loss of earnings etc., and can only refund for loss of service.
