My trusty old faithfull still going 3com CMX modem is currently running like a dream! Now I've just changed to teh VIP package this means 10mb service (WOOT!). This hasn't taken place yet (need to call) but will this modem cope with 10mb? or does it need replacing.

Oh, I think that will need replacing....I'm not 100% sure though.

Update:

Had a quick look at their site, the model is discontinued, but only seems to support 10 Base, so you may find you won't get 10Mb all the time, if at all.

If I can find out more, I'll report.

Update part 2:

No it won't, It appears to support speeds up to 3000K, which means you won't get 10Mb, so a new modem is in order.

Where are you getting your information from? I've been on 4mb for ages and the results are as follows :
Tue, 6 Mar 2007 17:26:10 UTC

1st 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1093 ms = 468.4 KB/sec, approx 3860 Kbps, 3.77 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1079 ms = 474.5 KB/sec, approx 3910 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps
4th 512K took 1078 ms = 475 KB/sec, approx 3914 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3900 Kbps, 3.81 Mbps

Which is over the 3000kb you state :)

Edit: Just foudn the manual states user data rates of up to 3000k* I'll call the cable tech support and go from there.

What modems are they sending out now? Would it be self install? Does it have rj45 (currently using to router)? Ta

NTl 250 or VM 255's, same modem but without USB support (finallly). Much smaller than your 3com, but extremely robust.

Cheers, I'll give VM a call see if they will send one for me to self install.

WHY OR WHY IS IT SO HARD!??!!! I've spent 45 mins on the phone being put back and forth, and got nowhere. Apparently my 10mb upgrade hadn't gone through, so she did it again and said it had now gone through. Still no difference! so put through to faults, kept explaining that it's my own OLD modem and I pay for hire and don't have one, got no where. So Still stuck on 4mb and no one wants to do anything about it. I must of given my details (same) out at least 5 times!!!!! I'll wait again and try tomorrow to see what happens, but as even the manual states that it 3000k and I'm managing 4000k I think the old girls doing well, but I'm not getting what I pay for.

I was on the 10Mb since it started and have been an Ntl cable modem client since day 1. I paid £199 for my 3COM CMX modem - twice! cos the first one packed in after 13 months or so.

Anyway, I got a new Ntl 250 on Saturday.

3Com CMX maxed out at a steady 990kb/s.
New Ntl 250 maxes at about 1.2Mb/s.

A 20% speed increase for free!

I did it cos I want to be ready for the 20Mb/s service, and knew the 3COM CMX has a 10 Base interface, meaning it might do 10Mb/s, but no chance it would do 20Mb/s

Nice

Hope this helps

Thanks monster, decided to try another speed test after another cable modem reboot and well as you say:
Thu, 8 Mar 2007 08:39:47 UTC

1st 512K took 563 ms = 909.4 KB/sec, approx 7493 Kbps, 7.32 Mbps
2nd 512K took 578 ms = 885.8 KB/sec, approx 7299 Kbps, 7.13 Mbps
3rd 512K took 547 ms = 936 KB/sec, approx 7713 Kbps, 7.53 Mbps
4th 512K took 594 ms = 862 KB/sec, approx 7103 Kbps, 6.94 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 7402 Kbps, 7.23 Mbps

Certainly better now but not right... I'm not asking much from Virgin just what I pay for, e.g. a modem (as they have never given me one)

Still using my ole CMX here on 10mb:

1st 512K took 553 ms = 925.9 KB/sec, approx 7629 Kbps, 7.45 Mbps
2nd 512K took 550 ms = 930.9 KB/sec, approx 7671 Kbps, 7.49 Mbps
3rd 512K took 534 ms = 958.8 KB/sec, approx 7901 Kbps, 7.72 Mbps
4th 512K took 571 ms = 896.7 KB/sec, approx 7389 Kbps, 7.22 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 7648 Kbps, 7.47 Mbps

Guess it'll bite the dust once 20mb service appears.

Well bit the dust and called customer services again yesterday. On hold 10 mins (norm), spoke to the lady and she said "no problem we'll get an engineer and new modem out". So new modem (engineer) on Tuesday :) WOOT!
