I was just about to download Ubuntu to test out my speed and I come across a Virgin Media link. Seems as if Virgin Media is now hosting Ubuntu images! Wee!

Funny thing is when VM was NTL they didn't support Linux so I wonder if this is a sign of something or VM just helping out the OS community? Whatever it is--it is a good step.

didn't telewest used to have some beefy servers with lots of useful things hosted on them? May have been one of the blueyonder servers....

He's not saying that they hosted Ubuntu, but BY used to host other files for games, patches etc.

Ya but it's nice to see VM hosting something as open and cool as Ubuntu.

Whats there an address that lists all of the files blueyonder used to host?

Help for Virgin Media Mirrors

You can connect to the the mirrors server using you favourite FTP program entering the following configuration:

Hostname: mirrors.virginmedia.com
Username: anonymous
Password: your e-mail address
The mirrored sites can be found in the "mirrors" directory.
If you have a recommendation for a new mirror please email us at ftp-mirrors@virginmedia.com

Nice one :tu:

Are Virgin providing this service to save them money by VM customers downloading from within VM network rather than having to get these large files from outside of VM and costing VM money?

maybe, but there again, you can download them for outside the virgin network which costs them money, so its probably just a nice thing to do.

Full speed on 10Mb using just 1 Thread though is amazing to me. I will use this from now on over FTP for things I need if they have them :).

They don't have all the Mac ones though.

True, they stopped serving the updates a while back for MAC it seems. Windows however, no problem, which i'd say is probably the majority of people playing.

20% of WoW players are on Mac. Oh well, I plan to get myself a Mac soon that is all and may take a 2nd look at WoW.

Maybe I should send a request to VM?

You need to be a Hacker to find the goodies, why the hell doesn't someone from VM do a bit of crowing about it, not every ISP is prepared to allocate space and resources so you would think it would be good PR to let the punters in on it.

Well done VM anyway :tu:, even if it was left for someone to stumble upon.

Waste of money and resources to mirror any Linux distribution. Bad decision VM.

^^ Boo! Open source is free and I'm glad VM supports it.
