Of all my tests, I have still not worked out how it works.

It used to be 2gig on the nose my speed gets cut in half for a period of 'undefined' time, but recently it's been cutting in half after 1.5gig.

I wish we could get a definitive answer so I can change my usage habits :(

It varies between 1.5gb and 2.5gbs from my experience

Your assuming it's capping. But it might not be. It could be that the UBR in your area is over subscribed. So peak time when everybody is on your broadband will suffer.
Down here my 2mb is very good no matter what time of day or night I go online. I had the same trouble last year. But when the local UBR was upgraded the speed was a constant near 2mb.

If it was that you would get a variation in speed, when the line is being capped the speeds are constant until 2 hours when the speeds are increased again.

Well if you go into the menu section you can check your operation config. Downstream would be 2048000 (2mb)and upstream would be 200000 (200). That's how it looks in the menu. You have to use the password root twice to get in.

No, it isn't true, someones made that up.

You really need to check your modem config, and if its correct, report a fault (and if it's wrong, report a different fault).

I don't understand how people are experiencing speed capping.

Today I have downloaded over 15gb of data. Not once did my speed drop, 1.2MB/s the whole time. This was done not just in off peak, but at peak times as well.

I live just east of Glasgow. Do you think it could be affected by location or by how many subscibers there are in your area/street???

The Broadband is still unlimited, you can still d//, just at a slower speed, just because the speed drops doesn't mean it's not unlimited!

Product is also sold as upto..

As far as I'm aware, they are only trialing shaping in a couple of areas and only on 10Mb.

I would imagine that it is either a fault or over an subcribed area.

1st go into the url

Then click on login. Then put in root for username and for password then go to operation config. Your speed details will be there. For 2mb it will say 2048000 and upload will say 200000.

If you're only getting this on small downloads - then it's probably a problem with your modem or configuration as previously advised.

Bearing in mind that not every website has unlimited servers, if lots of people are using the website to d/l files, this will affect users, why does everyone assume it's always capping.

There are other factors to consider, firewalls, spyware, virus, slow server, american server, etc....

If you don't like it leave and stop bitching about it.

It only happens evenings.
It's consistent speed.
It's capped.

Anyway you have 'up to 10MBit' not 10MBit so you'll will have to suck it up. :(
I wish that there WAS capping in my area cause its oversubscribed and ridiculous. I don't see why people complain when connection gets capped during
peak times. Too many people out there down/uploading warez constant so you have to suffer when trying to download a legit BF2 patch. Sucks I know but trust me its better than it is here. I cannot play online games atm - connection is just too weak. If i try to test download something fluctuates between like 1mbit and 6mbit and even pauses (goes to 0mb/sec) a lot.

I hope VM can sort it but I'm not sure they can keep up with the demand of areas like mine. The more Bandwidth they have the more people will use :P. Better not trial 20mbit here I say !

/Rant off

Shame really, ive never noticed a cap in my area, i reckon VM should prob concentrate at gettin the network workin fully at 100% for everyone or as near as possible. Yes you get people uploadin and downloadin all day but it does state unlimited, ok yep it also has a fair usage policy but really VM needs to work on gettin it all so we can all download 100% of the time all together workin at full speed really.
