Hi guys.

Bit of a strange problem i have. I play a lot of online games and have noticed over the last 2 weeks i'm getting really high ping spikes(my ping is stable at about 90 in us servers but it spikes from 150-350 pretty much all the time now. I have upgraded to the 10 meg ntl service to see if it will cure it but its still doing the same making games unplayable. When i first upgraded i ran a speed test with speedtest.net and everything looked ok,i just came out of game and ran another test when i had the spiking problem and it was way down on speed.

it was on 10 meg earlier on today but has dropped down to under 4 meg. Do you think it might be because its peak time! i have phoned ntl 6 times now and they can't seem to help. i think it might be time to go with a diffrent isp what you guys think.

If they are sending an engineer they must either know or think there is a fault somewhere.

probably your area is too congested, ask them too see if there is too much noise in ur line and see if they can do anything if not then they cant do anything
ive got the exact same problem , i have high ping rate but most of the times fine transfer rate, my problem is that too many people is in my area, the solution is turning off the "UBR", ask them if they can turn off the UBR, virgin told me the UBR in my area couldnt be turned off because it kept on "resetting". so the engineer told me to wait until the end of feb too see if they've fixed this problem...
engineers can only fix ur transfer rate not ur ping rate

Pings to the USA are always at least 100ms or higher. Its not unusual to have pings up to 300ms to the USA, especially at peak times. This is nothing to do with congestion, faults or a bad service, its simply the speed the data can travel.

is it just to UK servers or to US servers only?

yeah its the same with me only happened to me since virgin took over. Its bf2 i play as well. I know what your saying about the usa pings but the servers i play in are my clan servers and i get 90-100 ping for the last 3 months. It happens on uk servers as well pinging from 15-20 to 90-150. The guy on the phone said i had a 10% packet loss then checked again and it was ok done a third test and said it was a loss again. I have just done another speed test.

Everything is ok again but its early morning so maybe its to much traffic. If it is i will be cancelling my broadband and going with someone else if they cant sort it

Well there not sending an enginner now because they say the line is being over used! Well i'm not paying 35pound a month for 10 meg when at peak time when i need it to play games download etc im getting between 1-4 meg. i wouldnt mind the high ping so much if it didnt affect my games so much i cant play because of the lag. Anyone recommend a decent isp.....

chris.o - would it be possible to do some traceroutes to the game hosts at various times of the day? it could be transit/routing issues outside VM's networks.

They claim you're using it too much or are they saying that you're using a lot of upload when you're doing your pings?

If you're using full upload that'll cause problems with download and pings.
