View Full Version : Will Virgin be implementing DOCSIS 3 soon?

I have read briefly about DOCSIS standard and am wondering if Virgin will be impelemting DOCSIS ver 3 this year or so. As far as I can tell DOCSIS 2 can only go up to 42mbit, so if they are thinking of doing 50mbit connections won't they have to upgrade to DOCSIS 3? By the way I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to technical stuff.

How are they going to impelement 50 mbit connections if not going for the DOCSIS 3 standard?

50 Mb is being trialled in Dartford at the moment

...which means they'll probably launch 20Mb some time next year.

I've been told that VM have also tested 100Mb in lab conditions, and it worked well. I would imagine that if DOCSIS 3 is needed, they will eventually run across their network. Also, and probably more important to VM than the speed it gives is the ability for them to bond network channels. This gives them the capability of running more modems off a single card.

They would probably be better off just waiting a year, maybe double the current connection speeds, but don't bother with DOCSIS3 and just work on laying fibre down so they can stay ahead of BT.

I was on the 20mbit trial and it was great. I didn't have any probelms when on the trial and always downloaded at full 20mbit. I hope the bring in 20mbit connections soon.

If they want to support higher speeds, and increase customers on the current network, then they have no choice but to apply the DOCSIS 3 standard across their network.

There won't be any new cable laying, except network upgrades and some basic infill.

Ok so where are BT putting fibre in that will beat Virgin and please don't say CN21 that's only about Switches. Can you please produce evidence to back up this sweeping statement that BT are ahead of Virgin on Broadband. How much do you actually know about Docsis3, It must be a lot to make such a sweeping statement :Yikes:.

Would you care to tell me where BT will be doing more than ADSL2+ in say 3 years from now.
How are BT going to match 50 meg ? and do you think that will be copper or fibre ???

How will they match 100 meg when that finally hits the cable network ?

Considering that the go live date for CN21 here in Warrington is 2009 and that is only for inter switch how are they going to provide more than adsl2+ ?

From Samknows

BT 21CN rollout status Target date: Q2 2009

They can release 20Mb on DOCSIS 2, as it supports download speeds up to 32Mbps

DOCSIS1 and 2 support 38Mbps downstream.

Tiss true

If someone makes a claim like that above then they should be able to back it up with evidence. There is no point in making wild statements it does not help anyone. And will be highlighted very quickly :) :) :)

DOCSIS1 and 2 support 38Mbps downstream.

LOL, I think we are both wrong, pinched this chart from Wiki. :)

DOCSIS Downstream Upstream
1.x 42.88 (38) Mbit/s 10.24 (9) Mbit/s
Euro 57.20 (51) Mbit/s 10.24 (9) Mbit/s
2.0 42.88 (38) Mbit/s 30.72 (27) Mbit/s
3.0 +160 Mbit/s +120 Mbit/s

And dont forget there is no Docsis 2 live on the network as far as i know ?.

Isn't there?

Hmmmm, one for the network techies to confirm, but you're probably right.

I love these 'technical' threads, they always bring out some fine FUD ;)

We have 8MHz channels here kids, PAL land not NTSC, so can use EuroDOCSIS 2 with its' 51Mbit downstream channels and 31.72Mbit upstream (before overheads, 27 or so after) upstream channels.

No reason why VM can't roll out 51Mbit downstream channels anywhere, and 20Mbit is more than doable with appropriate network configuration, which would be more than enough to compete against ADSL2+.

Indeed 30Mbit down and 5Mbit up is being done on normal DOCSIS 2, and 24Mbit down, 8Mbit up on EuroDOCSIS 2 in Sweden on UPC.

It's a question of spending the cash really :)

Argh no way I've lost enough of my life to learning about DOCSIS already... then I had to learn DSL as well :D
