View Full Version : 10MB - what should I expect???

I upgraded from 4MB to 10MB yesterday, possibly imagining it'd be more amazing than what it was in theory, 10mb being 2.5 times what I had before.

At points I did think pages on some sites seemed to load much quicker but then another minute it seemed as slow as it was before on the 4MB. I did wonder if it was the router that determined the speed quite a bit or not...
I have a WRT54G with DD-WRT v23 SP2 firmware.

I checked the modem (Webstar DPX-100) and that stated downstream of 10240000bps so I could see I was on the 10mb service.

I still don't understand why when I do the speed test on this site the best I can ever get is about 4mbps...usually around 2-3mbps...?

What does everyone else get on the speed test who are on 10mbps? Does it vary a bit?

All in all I was a bit disappointed, it doesn't really seem that quick...

1st 512K took 938 ms = 545.8 KB/sec, approx 4497 Kbps, 4.39 Mbps
2nd 512K took 953 ms = 537.3 KB/sec, approx 4427 Kbps, 4.32 Mbps
3rd 512K took 968 ms = 528.9 KB/sec, approx 4358 Kbps, 4.26 Mbps
4th 512K took 1000 ms = 512 KB/sec, approx 4219 Kbps, 4.12 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 4375 Kbps, 4.27 Mbps

I get under 2Mbps and I'm on the 10Mb service, so you should count yourself lucky. I'd LOVE to see speeds like that.

well mine is fine 3 x connections to giganews = 1 mb/s (what i limited it too) speedtests are crap if u use any i suggest this, speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and post results ! OR use a download manager and download a file from microsoft

You should expect at max (which you should achieve through Usenet/Newsgroups) 1.18MB/s :)

My downloads are always spot on from Newsgroups.

Not bad speed from Microsoft.com either tonight.

Do the speed test without the router connected to try and isolate the issue...

Just tried that speedtest as recommended (cheers for that, will favorite it):

4038kbps download
231kbps upload

@janipewter
Surely you can't be happy paying £35 for a 2mb speed?! I was reading the posts about Reading having a really bad 10mb service...

Mine doesn't seem to have changed that much from my 4mb service...

---------- Post added at 00:02 ---------- Previous post was yesterday at 23:53 ----------

Just tried downloading Service Pack 2 from XP the same and it was about 540kb/s...

Does seem good on that I suppose...not as impressive as 1MB/s!

What does everyone else here on 10mb get on the speedtest in this thread?

Cheers guys. I shall try with a direct connection as suggested (without router). I remember trying that with the 4mb service and it still underperformed. Could it be the modem even (Webstar DPX100?).
The router is a 54Mbps WRT54G. I'm using my laptop on wireless with a 50% signal in the same room as the router...

Hmm...interesting, just tried it directly connecting the laptop to the modem...

See the results:

Yeah its definetly your router thats causing the issue..... I'm having this same issue, I haven't brought a new router yet as I'm hoping VM will start supplying them again, i spoke to CS about this and they said they should within a few months. If you cant wait get a buffalo or a netgear router....

Or a Linksys - the WRT54G model is very popular around this forum.

note how 1.2 mb/s goes high on the graph, because i limit to 1 mb/s to avoid being shaped by ntl :) (3.5 gb a hour isnt bad anyways)

I get between 700-800kb/s when using ntlworld news server or 10 connections to usenetserver.com

By the way what is the difference between news.ntlworld.com and cable.news.ntlworld.com (second one might not be quite right but there is the word "cable" in there somewhere). I have been using just news.ntlworld.com with broadband for years.

1.16mb through HTTP. 1.1mb through BitTorrent.

...I don't know why its 1.1mb for BitTorrent.

Yep - that's the one I've got...using the DD-WRT Firmware for p2p...
I gave up on my Netgear WGT634U after it needed to be rebooted pretty much every night. My linksys still plays up but only now and then....much much less than the Netgear did...

Hmm..whereabouts in the country is that?

Spoke to a colleague at work with 10MB VM broadband and he says he gets about 500kb download speeds in BitTorrent...

My downloads are only about 22kb/s at the moment, it's not often they go above about 25kb/s...I've seen them up to about 200kb/s...

BitTorrent is useless for testing speeds. You'll only ever download as fast as people upload, which is usually crap, unless you're using a decent (private) tracker.

Go download some Linux via http/ftp from somewhere like ...... hxxp://www.mandriva.com/en/download/mandrivaone

and you should see speeds like this .....

I just upg from 4mb to 10mb and I was only getting 6.5mb - PC direct connection - 9.6. Had to go out and buy a new router to replace my aging but reliable SMC. Linksys WRT54 as recommended on here. Managed to get 9.8 tonight - good stuff indeed.

What SMC did you have? I have the SMC Barricade 4 port one and can only realise about 720kb/s.

Thats the one I had. I even upgraded the firmware and still the same. If you want to get full speed it's a new router.

Cleveland area. I get the 1.1mb through private-trackers which tends to get its high speeds through servers, anyway. So I'm still wondering why it only gets 1.1mb flat rate when HTTP settles at 1.16mb.

...Make sure your not using a client that is using a four digit TCP port number. (Though its only 4226 or there abouts that NTL and now Virgin have tightened. Yet that's been for years.) ...Just use uTorrent.

I went to PCworld today to get one. I could not believe that 95% of their Linksys routers have the little white label on saying PRE-OWNED. They did not have any new ones of the type I wanted.

I reluctantly bought a pre-owned one. Typed in http://192.168.1.1 what do you know. The previous owner changed the default password so I now have a piece of junk that I have to waste time returing tomorrow. I've already been banned from that branch before and I recon I'll get banned again after I have a go at them :(

REM do a Hard reset.

I think you turn on the router while pushing in the reset button, this will do a factory reset

Oh. I'll give that a try. Thanks.

EDIT: Well You were nearly right. That set it up for a firmware upgrade. Just holding the reset for a long time did the trick. I had pressed it before but didn't hold it long enough. Anyway thanks again.

My download speed is now very satisfactory. I swear it peaked at 1.16 or something at the start of the download, but it stayed between 980 and 990 for the full download.
