View Full Version : Ntl to reduce upload speed on 10mb

I saw this on the other site, and if it is true and not just a typo, it seems pointless to continue paying £34.99 for the same upload as the 4mb tier :td:

LOL Why do you think I downgraded from 10meg to 2meg - It certainly wasn't because I wanted to save pennies (I've been giving Telewest top tier money for over 5 years) : More like I didn't want to waste pennies ;)

They rang me up the other week and as asked if everything was ok with the downgrade and stuff : I gave them a good piece of my mind.

Indeed and that's why i think its a typo. They have redesigned the page in the last day or two and it could have been done by someone involved with the Telewest side of things or it could be true. I can see it being upsetting to the torrent fans if it is true, That's one of the reasons i use the newsgroups, The upload is far to low if you are a p2p users..

I've been on to retentions over this and they have agreed to free broadband for the next four generations of the Angry family, free TV and our own syndicated TV reality show and to pay off the outstanding mortgage on our holiday home.

I think their direct debit for next month is safe!

Excellent news. Let me know if you want a plasma tv and lcds in every room as well. That's the new offer from retentions for those that say the magic word and only phone on a sunday every blue moon.

Was talking about this today to an NTL employee...

Apparently they are altering the speeds so 20mbit can have 512k up!

And these are also the same upload speeds TW users have...i guess they want the same all across?

If it is true, you would imagine they would increase Telewest's upload, rather than decrease Ntl's

Ok if you want to take it as gospel fine. But i have heard nothing and i honestly think its a typo. Plus show me where NTL have said they are going to give customers 20 meg. NOTE i said NTL not the rumour maker on the street corner.

NTL trailed 20 meg yes. But that does not mean they will release it.

yes and no, from the view of a customer wanting more for their money you would expect telewest's to be increased. from a network view point, there will be a reason why telewest's upload is lower and if it means it cant be increased without substantial changes to the network or price then it'll obviously be the limiting factor and so ntl's will have to be reduced

If I were at ntl towers, I wouldn't have tiered packages on the download side but on the upload instead.

It seems that it's the upload speeds that causes most problems for ntl's netwoek. So, why not have diffrent packages based soley on upload speed? Everyone could, network permitting, all download at 10mb. But, everyone would be on diffrent upload packages depending on what you use and prepared to pay.

Plus, if ntl ever do bring out their legal p2p services, it would be another way to make money out of the downloaders. Don't get charged for what you download, but what you upload. No uploads, no downloads...

I am on 10mb and I game alot on Battlefield 2142, and my partner uses MSN and Yahoo and some chatrooms, my ping then is about 70 or 80, without her using the net I drop to about 20-40.

Now your going to drop my upload on 10mb? let me tell you now NTL you do this and that £35 per month will be shoved so far up your **** you will be spitting my sacm from your nasal passages.

I expect at least 512k upload on 10mb and I will not pay more to you to get more you thieving robbing swines, your network is falling to pieces and your talking about 20mb?

Well I wish to know and soon.

I am not impressed and I may even write a formal complaint about this to them giving a true piece of my mind, and make sure that a stink its kicked up on about every single forum I can find about this.

NTL's network barely can handle 10mb users, and now they want to add 20mb users and then sod the 10mb £35 a month paying users downgrade those SO YOU CAN LINE YOUR WALLETS WITH WHAT?? £40-50 A MONTH USERS ON 20MB who will get no where near those speeds and give them our uploads speeds so you can then get even more profits for 2007, you idiotic ****ing company NTL you have just proven if you do this that your customers are nothing to you, that you do not care about the quality of service, and care they get and that the only thing which matters to you is how much profit your making per month.

download causes problems especially if the bottom tier was 10mbit with unlimited bandwidth. When its said its hard to provide upload bandwidth I meant rather its harder to provide 1meg upload then 1 meg download.

Also bear in mind although there seems to be a moderate amount of users on here demanding high upload speeds the generic web surfer isnt interested in upload speeds and the headline spec of the product is download speed.

---------- Post added at 00:09 ---------- Previous post was at 00:07 ----------

to add I would be ****ed of also tho if I was paying 35 notes and had a downgrade of upload speed, but then again I would be one of the few probably upgrading to the £50 tier if it turned up.

I'll have to find out but iI know someone with BT Broadband who gets 8mb down with 400 up for £24.99. Or a very close amount.

Either way I plan on speaking to him soon likely in the morning and having a word, if this is final from NTL and fact and not a typo I plan on changing my provider, it's overpriced now but a drop in service to facilitate a upgraded speed to another tariff of which can only serve a as a financial appeal over any hope of service quality is just beyond contempt.

I find it odd that Motorola would provide a built-in webpage-like config... thingy [technical term :D] for the 3100, but not the 4100.

Have you tried:
http://192.168.100.1/

Then again, as far as I can see, my 3100 doesn't list what speed it's set to, so if your 4100 just shows the same stuff it won't provide the info you want.

I'm with BY and am used to the 384 upload, was rather hoping that we'd get the NTL 512 but seems they're going the other way on this.
What surprises me tho,if it's true,is the timing...why do it now when it means taking something away from your customers which is bound to upset more than a few people.Surely,if the rumoured upgrades are true, that would be the time to do it....put the 10meg on the 20/768 that BY has trialled. That way you'd be complaining that you weren't given as much, for free, that you'd expected or hoped for.A totally different scenario and ,in my opinion,no real justification for a complaint

Anyways...my upload is set at 512k but i've been struggling to get over 30kb/s for a few weeks now, but im guessing thats due to nottinghams upload bandwith being saturated like hell (ntl have admitted this)

I expect at least 512k upload on 10mb and I will not pay more to you to get more you thieving robbing swines, your network is falling to pieces and your talking about 20mb?

Sort your network out and listen to the customers not your accountants.

Trust me i know nothing of this. But there again its the people at the coal face who are normally the last to know. It will make me consider my broadband supplier even if i work for them. I cannot afford to have my upload drop as i play games as well.

of course the NTL users can also use the T&C to get out of the contract, or even take NTL to small claims court for breach if they so wish (as is your right under consumer law).

and if this significant change were to find its way to the Virgin Media towers and become fact rather than rumour, then id assume theregister.co.uk and all the other broadband news agencys would be interested in the users thoughts and wishes.

i assume someone has dropped mike or tony (http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/about/contact/) ,perhaps one of the other lads there a note to look into this for a news report if its required for a nice topical cristmas scrooge story....

its also possible that the TW users could also make news for not being given the current higher NTL upload rate yet paying the same rates.

also the point about your average downloader NOT careing about it, that might be true, however thats ONLY
because they dont know the reasons.

if the main web news sites were to explain the fact the if your uploads rate go down your gaming suffers directly because of that reduction, im sure as hell that THEY WOULD CARE and kick up a stink and perhaps we might see better ratio offers in time as the complaints role in.

Everyone i have spoken to that would be involved in something like this say they have not heard anything about a change. It was indeed a typo - I have had it confirmed by ntl - They have now corrected the error @ http://home.ntl.com/websales/product.do?id=3264 .

The upload for 10Mb is still 512kbps.

To Felinix Devotion - As already mentioned - the ntl website has just recently been upgraded - so a mistake such as this can be easily made. No need to look too much into it.

Change will be happening from 9 o'clock tonight:D

Serious part: Aint there alot of doom and gloom merchants/conspiracy theorists out there.

Jon, you are 100% right....I would like to know how much of a percentage of NTL customers are really suffering slow speeds, say they got the 10meg but only getting something like 1 meg and then where they are based.

I've since day1 that NTL came with 10 meg never been below 9meg :D but then that might be lucky.

also with all people saying ADSL is better...dream on..only if your living in the exchange itself then you get good speed after 500meters then you are already stuck on say 3meg outta the 8 you should get.

Apparently NTL said it was an error on the webpage, which has now been corrected. It was the upload rates for TW that had been quoted and not NTL's.

So does that mean us BY customers are being "upped" to 512k or does this only related to NTL packages and we're stuck with the measly 384k we have now??

It doesn't mean anything of the sort - It was two typos that have now been corrected - You are looking at ntl's web portal, so obviously this is specific to ntl broadband services.

NTL wouldn't downgrade the service to Telewest's poor upload speeds, it's just a typo since the NTL site has been redesigned to the nicer looking Telewest's site.

They must have been doing too much copy and paste!

From NTLs site:

Features

Ultra fast up to 10Mb speed. Upload at 512kbps.http://home.ntl.com/websales/product.do?id=3246

Atleast its safe to say the 10Mbps package hasn't been downgraded

On the 4100 if you go to 192.168.100.1 and click on logs you'll see 4 columns, one of these is labelled code.Look for E102.0 and you should see something like this in the message column
SW Download INIT - Via Config file cm-10240-384
I'm with BY and am used to the 384 upload, was rather hoping that we'd get the NTL 512 but seems they're going the other way on this.
What surprises me tho,if it's true,is the timing...why do it now when it means taking something away from your customers which is bound to upset more than a few people.Surely,if the rumoured upgrades are true, that would be the time to do it....put the 10meg on the 20/768 that BY has trialled. That way you'd be complaining that you weren't given as much, for free, that you'd expected or hoped for.A totally different scenario and ,in my opinion,no real justification for a complaint

Just done a reboot an my SB4100 and the only line I get that is to do with code is this

*** BOOTING *** SB4100-0.4.9.4-SCM02-NOSH

There's nothing obvious about it - the companies have "merged", the packages are being changed... there's no reason that the intention to have them the same might not be true, regardless of the fact the NTL site had a typo. There could just as easily be typos on the BY site!!

There's nothing obvious about it.

Yes there absolutely is. The obvious clue and as already mentioned - its on the ntl website thus, its all about ntl broadband services. You are on BY, so there is a seperate web portal all about BY services.

the companies have "merged", the packages are being changed...

But haven't as of yet! The other clue, there hasn't been any announcement that ntl and Telewest have finally combined all products and services into a single portfolio of services available.

I cannot seriously believe that a typo being corrected suddenly signalled to you that BY customers might get the same as ntl customers? I have absolutely no idea how you come to work that one out.

Regardless, if the companies are merging, they are still running seperate services for the time being, besides - even if there was a small change to the upload rate, it isn't a sudden signal that both companies have now intergrated and running a single set of services.

there's no reason that the intention to have them the same might not be true,

I haven't even commented on this being true or untrue. I have simply and can quite categorically point out that the errors on the ntl website were simple little typos due to the site undergoing a recent update. It is nothing more, nothing less. Too much has been looked into this than there needs to be. Despite the obvious being spelled out to some people several times now.

There isn't a typo on Telewest's site, it's said 384K (On 10Mb) Upload on Telewest for a long time now, and NTL has been 512K (On 10Mb) for a long time now too so since NTL redesigned their site to look like Telewest, someone must have copied incorrect info from Telewest site, that is all...
