seen as a wii thread was setup i thought sony deserves one too:

a look at the playstation 3:

look for the show on:

On the Spot - 11/03/06

also:

PlayStation 3 is famously region-free, playing PS3 games from any region, but IGN reports that this does not extend to games that are backwards-compatible.

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=69871

and also for the japanese, a firmware update which was issued on day one of the launch and some information about its open platform software:

"the system's ability to run "any desired third-party system software".

tweaking a bunch of multimedia settings, allowing for downloads in the Internet browser and PS3 Store among other things.

the PS3's PSP style interface in video:

esitmates indicate 88,400 consoles were sold at the launch in japan. game tie-in ratio was a mere 0.98 per console indicating most either couldnt afford the games and bought the console or simply auctioned them off

interesting
http://www.gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2006/11/ps3bargain-thumb.jpgISuppli took apart the PS3, sourced all the components and found it to have some serious engineering mojo.

The premium model costs $840.35 to make (Which sells at a loss for $600.)

The Xbox 360 on the other hand, costs $323 to make, these days. So, what we're trying to get at here is that the PS3 is a good deal. A lot of bang for the buck. A Bargain. A wonderful surprise, for us, and for Sony. Good job, guys!

well i have been saying that sony is taking a big hit, the estimates of losses seem to be true with these figures.

yeah but the GFX chip being more than the Cell, i cant beleave that Nvidia price, still theres plently of scope to replace parts and get the price down later, marvel 11g for one,and that IO seems OTT too.

hang on, have i got it somewhat wrong, what exactly does the RS do in the machine?, just GPU work....

Depends where they are getting the prices from for components - do we really believe that Sony pay list price?

true, they have massive scale so are going to get better price, plus people are going to look at this for more than a mear game machine (we are not talking Commodore CD32 here LOL)as zing said elsewere, so thats even more scale/sales.

thats puzzling but may make sense, it is after all a 3.2ghz processor, we are led to believe that its such a powerful chip, but is it really ? i mean from what i have read the 7 SPE (synergistic processing elements) are part of its preformance system.

by the way under todays currency markets the direct conversion to pounds is £445.237

LOL, no bashing from me, the CD32 being cool and first, did you get the memory upgrades though....

iv had all of them over time except 4000.

including 1000,500,2000,1500,CD32 etc, UNIX was fun on the 2000, as was the 286 and 386 PC bridgeboard cards, isa network, and genlocking ;)

still got 2 1200's with a 68040, 1500 with GFX and network card, i even once hacking up up a 590 and slotted it in to the 1500 reversed zorro slot (the 1000 and the 590 slots were reversed/mirror images that can plug in there) ,worked a treat LOL, fun days.....

You forget popper, the 360 has been out a long while now which has allowed a constant production and as we all know components for these consoles get cheaper over time, so Microsoft did take a big hit early on but they can afford it lol, so a year later I expect to see about £70 dropped off the PS3 maybe more.
