Its true you know. (http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2006/11/09/theres-a-ps2-hiding-in-the-ps3-to-guarantee-100-backwards-compatibility-for-8181-ps2-games.htm)

Sony’s PS3 is embedded with the Emotion Engine (EE) microprocessor and the Graphics Synthesizer (GS) drawing circuit developed for its precursor, the PS2. Ken Kutaragi, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), revealed this in an interview with the Japanese Nikkei Electronics.

it was ken who said it months ago, its presumably designed to enable compatibility of games to be near 100%, not like the transition of psone to ps2, where some games dont work, and on the newer slimline model, to ensure no repeat of the original xbox game compatibility updates required due to the differing architecture on the 360.

Actually, there is a good reason Microsoft couldn't have done that. Nvidia owned the rights to a lot of the technology in the xbox, and with nvidia no longer providing anything for the Xbox, they were not willing to release the rights.

Heh, talking of PS2s and PS3s, here's a funny article from 1up.com...

Is history repeating itself?

No console maker has ever dominated three consecutive platform generations. Atari squandered its head start in the 80s, Nintendo lost its near monopolistic stranglehold in the 90s, and now it's Sony's turn to pass the baton. Or is it? The PS3 may have seen its share of negative press lately, but Sony seems to be lining up a perfect repeat success of the PS2. The outlook for PS3 is actually not all that different as it was for the PS2 when it was first introduced in 2000.
