Well, it looks like "unlimited" NTL are up to their old tricks, this time moving people who are over some arbitrary (and unannounced) "heavy usage" figure to a certain IP range.

As a matter of interest, what IP range are those experiencing speed issues with newsgroups etc currently within?
Mine is 86.8.xxx.xxx are the rest of you in the same range?

I cannot get any sort of speed out of newshosting but can get full speed on Giganews at any time of the day.

ip is 86.11.***.***

Interesting, is it possible that they are just targeting UNS and NH then?

If that is the case, then I'm sure those two can claim anti competitive behaviour on NTL's part

I'll sign up to giganews's 3 day trial and see if that is the case, thanks for the info Bill C

Or their link to Newshosting could just be knackered.

Or their link to Newshosting could just be knackered.

And their link(s) (I tried various routing options avoiding any slowdowns) to UNS are knackered too?

Sorry, I don't believe that for a minute

Ok at the moment i have others using my connection.

I have just tried a test and this is my download speed at the moment. What with contention and the others in my house using my connection i think this is ok.

hold on will show you :)

I stopped the download after the last screen grab. As i don't download in peak time. But i restarted it so show that in my opinion Newshosting are not telling the whole truth. This shows it as well i think.

My ip. 82.16.xxx.x

I can't figure out why giganews isn't being affected? What's the default port for giganews, and if you can, try 119 on giganews to see if speed is limited. Of course this would need to be done my someones who deems themselves to be in the "NTL punishment zone"

That is the port giganews uses and i have not had any problems. I have given up on newshosting as in my opinion it is there fault.

and this is giganews at the moment. On port 119

Tell you what Bill, send me your giganews login, and i'll test it for you ;)

I'm tempted to try em out since it has a free 3 days trial, mine as well spend the extra 10 bucks to get the moneys worth out of my 10mb.

So am I. I'm also tempted to inform UNS and NH that NTL have singled them out for the speed drop, as they will lose customers over this to Giganews.

I'll happily move to GN if it means I can continue getting the speeds I pay for the few times a month I need it.

Still trying to ascertain what the range is, or if it's irrelevant.

tis ok UNS have a message up now

We are currently experiencing a problem with our fiber channel network. This will cause download and connection failures. We should have a solution in about an hour.

You can test giganews speed on their webpage, they have a little flash app to test download speeds from the europe and US servers.

My ip is in the 86.7.xx.xx range

I am not a heavy downloader at all so i am guesssing your theory is incorrect.

( but my speeds are appauling )

PC_Arcade

It's not my theory it's what I and others have been told by Usenetserver and newshosting.

I hope it is / I am wrong, because I don't particularly want to have to leave NTL again.

Taken from NH support newsgroup posted by Jason (NH Tech):

I've explained this once.. I will again. GN has a private 10G peering
connection to NTL. NTL is not limiting their private peering sessions.
Once we get our AMS pop established it will work around the issue just
like GN has.

> I find it impossible to believe that this is NOT a NH issue.

Well, it's not.

I'd suspect the idea of a 'punishment range' is cobblers - on a distributed network with IP ranges devolved down to areas sometimes of a few streets, this would be prohibitively hard to manage at a national level. In fact, we've been trying to move away from small disparate IP ranges over the last year or so, to reduce maintenance load. Anyone coming out with a clever idea like this would have a posse of grim-faced DHCP configuration boys baseball-batting some sense into them.

Indeed ;)

And for anyone who uses Newshosting. these two screen shots have just been done now. They show the same file being downloaded from Newshosting and from Giganews.

My feeling is that newshosting are not giving out the full story. There has been no jiggery pokery with these shots. :)

As far as I was aware IP addresses were determined purely by what UBR and headend you are on (and previously what cable).

PC_Arcade
09-11-2006, 22:34
Yeah, I'm sure it's not IP ranges as such, but they're definitely shaping SOME usenet providers.

Interestingly when I phoned CS, they were very keen to know how much I was paying for usenetserver. Chargeable NTL newsgroups on the way?

my ip is 82. and i have used both Nh and GN both dropped to about 600k on my 10 meg line both had worked fine in the past just the last few weeks i been swapping and testing them both only way to get NH to full 10 meg is to open more slots like 15-20 but then they tell you offf :>
they told me to use 10 slots on port 9000 still sux at 600k tried ports 7000 8000 119, starts off fine then drops to half speed...

Ive found that i need to use different ports to newshosting at different times of the day. Im now maxing out my connection at almost 3pm sunday which was unheard of before, but if i leave it on the current port and try downloading at 7pm the speed will be shocking.
I have to change to a different port at night time, i still cant max out my connection but i get about 800 - 900k/sec on 10mb which is more than good enough.
