Hi

Apparently your not alone .. not had a great problem with NNTP & newshosting myself but some blips .. been maxing out today best ever been @ 1.2mb .. i normally only get 1 - 1.1

have seen Liverpool mentioned elsewhere as being patchy lately .. could be the 20mb trials or just a fault somewhere local .. have you chech the status page @ blueyonder ?

appears lots of usually stable connections have had problems recently wether a coincidence that they appeared roughly same time as 20mb trials or wether its something else i cant say not been on cable that long

still only two of us at News-Shack on cable and although ive asked in several places for peeps to post some speedtest results to see if can get idea of the poor areas and the throttled areas but sadly no one seems willing to join the experiment ... at least the thread is still open at the shack anyone wishes to help me out .. dont have to reg can email me your results

http://www.isp-shack.com/forum/showthread.php?t=829 for any who can spare a few mins

Thanks for the heads-up guys ... will get it fixed .. think the domain is changing so causing a few probs

also should be opening all boards for guests to view apart from couple areas for members only :)

www.News-Shack.com .. domain should now be working replacing the older www.ISP-Shack.com domain but both should work in tandem for a while

link in sig will be updated :tu:

Giganews is probally the best to use with Telewest, i can reach max speed 85% of the time with hardly and speed drops.

Would've posted on your forum but I'm not registering, sorry.

Well I did this first
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2006/11/44.png

Result is pretty shocking, but straight after got the following result from the speedtest here.

Wed, 08 Nov 2006 22:36:38 GMT

1st 512K took 2078 ms = 246.4 KB/sec, approx 2030 Kbps, 1.98 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2062 ms = 248.3 KB/sec, approx 2046 Kbps, 2 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2063 ms = 248.2 KB/sec, approx 2045 Kbps, 2 Mbps
4th 512K took 2062 ms = 248.3 KB/sec, approx 2046 Kbps, 2 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2042 Kbps, 2 Mbps

So which 1 is more likely to be correct because there's helluva difference there.

Have you contacted TW yet to see where the problem is ? I used to have even crappier speeds than what your getting now and it was down to the UBR i was on was "overcrowded" and then they switched me over to a less busier UBR and all was and still is good.

Ive started having the exact same problems since last night. Tried the usual rebooting cable modem, router etc.

One time rebooting the modem it just hung on the receive light for about 5-10 minutes. My download speed tests result in 90KB/s 110KB/s sometimes spiking to 200KB/s. Downloads from giganews which always max's my connection to 1100/1200KB/s are now at 80-90KB/s. There are no problems on the status page with my area.

Thing is it has been a rock solid 10mbit since 10mbit was available..

If its any help im using a Motorola SB5101E

My 4 meg is less than 2 meg today we are on UBR 02 brom in the Redditch area, usually get 3.95 but drops around 5.30 every night for an hour or so then goes back up to normal

Edit: Its gone back up now, speedtests can be so misleading depending on the load they are under I suppose, Myspeed PC test is usually the most reliable for me but ATM its giving less than 2 meg

well whatever it was it seems to have resolved itself.

PS. After doing so many speed tests at home thought I would do one at my work.. Dont think the speedtest.net site is fast enough

Im 100mbit full duplex .. man I would love to fire up some torrents on my work box ;)

Most likely not, remember those sites normally test with a file which is like 2 or 3MB - hardly any good to calculate your speed when you're using a connection which can download upwards of 10MB per second :p:

I am also on this exchange... My 10Mb connection runs at 5Mb max all the time. At peak times, like evenings and weekends it drops to 2Mb or below for me as well. Blueyonder told me the exchange needs to be upgraded but that "will take months".

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2006/11/37.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Another way that BY told me to test the connection is to hook a pc up directly to the cable modem and then download two files simultaneously from gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk. The files should be in larger than 50Mb each. I usually use Unreal Tournament...

Have you complained? If enough of us on UBR 02 brom kick up enough of a fuss maybe they will do something about it.

Mines not too bad atm, its weird that I thought UBR brom was Bromsgrove but my webstats show Blueyonder Wolverhampton

I get far better speed with wireless disabled & using wires from the router, no chance of neighbours leaching my bandwidth :D

At 6:27am:

Download Speed: 9552 kbps (1194 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 357 kbps (44.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'll post results of another test around midday when I'm back from college. I haven't seen my connection drop below 4Mbps for a while so I'm happy because I rarely ever use all that speed.

Also started having this problem in the Lincoln area, only happens during peak times aswell.

My DL speed is erratic, it reports from 0.1MB to 0.8MB
My UL speed seems to be unaffected.

I have the 1MB line.

Erratic as hell here lin reddiitch atm, speedtest needle is swinging back & forth like a pendulum with a surge up to 3.90 followed 2 secs later by a drop to sub 1meg speeds

Bit of an update from another thread, for lincoln in specific the UBRs are in the red, im guessing this problem is starting to appear right across the network as NTL gain more customers yet cannot/will not keep up with upgrading the network to accomidate these new customers.

I would like to point you all to the thread on Throttling (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=33603850) the reason for 90% of slow speeds is down the the utilisation issue disscused there.
Other things that create slow speeds is Low SNR on the UBR you are connected to, this kind of issue is normaly sorted withing 24 - 48 hours i have seen SNR issue go on for up a month.

(Now hilariously referred to as "Up to" - but contracted "as") 10MB* in Belfast.

Sun, 03 Dec 2006 19:24:42 GMT

1st 512K took 16578 ms = 30.9 KB/sec, approx 255 Kbps, 0.25 Mbps
2nd 512K took 17688 ms = 28.9 KB/sec, approx 238 Kbps, 0.23 Mbps
3rd 512K took 18516 ms = 27.7 KB/sec, approx 228 Kbps, 0.22 Mbps
4th 512K took 14093 ms = 36.3 KB/sec, approx 299 Kbps, 0.29 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 255 Kbps, 0.25 Mbps

Could someone in NI kindly pop down to NTL HQ and stick another pound in the meter please?

This has been going on for the past six weeks!!

That was quick!! Thanks to whoever that was.

Sun, 03 Dec 2006 19:38:10 GMT

1st 512K took 4187 ms = 122.3 KB/sec, approx 1008 Kbps, 0.98 Mbps
2nd 512K took 6844 ms = 74.8 KB/sec, approx 616 Kbps, 0.6 Mbps
3rd 512K took 6203 ms = 82.5 KB/sec, approx 680 Kbps, 0.66 Mbps
4th 512K took 6078 ms = 84.2 KB/sec, approx 694 Kbps, 0.68 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 750 Kbps, 0.73 Mbps

By my calculations you'll need to stick another £17.00 in - any chance you could nip back down and I'll square you up later?

Speed is appalling in RG12 - upload quicker than download !!!
