View Full Version : New STB required for 2Mb broadband?

In Leeds, with a really old Pace STB.

I'm paying £17.99 for a "2Mb" service, but in reality it's **nowhere** near that at all - and from reading other threads it's not capable of doing so.

Just spoke to CS, who seemed to think that it is capable.

Are they right? If so, I may as well downgrade to 512k and save £3 a month as I won't see any difference in speed.

You should get at least 1Mb through the STB, what speed are you actually getting?

Was less than that when I last ran speedtest. I haven't run it for a while to be honest, but will do so when I get home and post the results. What in reality should I be expecting? Thanks for the feedback.

You need at least a Samsung 2100 for speeds over 1Mb they were introduced when the top speed was upped to 1.5Mb and they are good for up to 5Mb.

If you may want to go to 10Mb, see if you can get a modem.

I have been trying to get my 2 meg upgrade, every time I request a free upgrade CS tell me that the PACE box (4010) will not go above 1 Meg but as it is working, tough luck. "You will have to wait until it breaks down" I wonder if a megger to test the continuity would help ? :D :D

You should be able to upgrade, getting a modem installed to replace the STB, leaving the STB for digi TV only. There may be a one off installation charge, that varies.

Thanks for all the thoughts. Here is my SpeedTest summary:

Overall Average Speed = approx 949 Kbps, 0.93 Mbps

That's about as much as the STB would handle, ring them back and tell them you cannot achieve your service level with the equipment that you have and that you want a SACM or a Samsung STB that can handle the increased tier speeds.

Hi,
I'm in the same situation but haven't phoned CS yet.
I was planing on waiting for the tv drive to become available and get a SACM at the same time.

I wont notice an increase from 1mb to 2mb to be honest, so while its working i'm leaving it alone.

Hi I have just recently had a cable modem put in this week. I had broadband through a Pace box for quite a few years.
Just phoned customer services and told them that my Pace box only allows upto 1mb speeds and NTL have upgraded their service to 2mb.
Customer services arranged a date for the cable modem to be fitted and everything is ok.
It seems to be common knowledge within NTL that the Pace boxes are limited in this way.

If they won't give you a SACM or Samsung to do 2Mb, what's the minimum term you can bump to 4Mb for ?
