Oh dear, posted on wrong forum page! too busy looking about for what info needed!! Sorry !

Hi All, First Post on this forum. Looking for some expert help for my problem! , which i have read many times in this forum, (enuff begging yet? ) I am getting lots of problems on my 10Mb connection. Ive been on TW BB since it started in my area and have kept the same modem throughout! I have a Motorola SB4100. Have been very happy with it until recently. ( Last three months) Im getting really low speeds, cant even keep up with a online radio station at 192Kbps, keeps buffering. Downloading from the blueyonder ftp i get max 240, my usual >100. Its really getting me down. The upstream is FINE. maxes out at 360 and above at times. I have changed Upstream channels on modem config page, doesnt make a difference. I put a wireless card into my machine and hooked into someone near who has a telewest connection ( judging by IP gateways etc) No problems, radio plays fine and webpages download quick, download speed better than mine, but must live a little way away cuz speed on wireless is only around 2-4 Mb. I have rang support many times, they had a word with second level, they agreed that im getting varying download speeds but will not send an engineer out until someone near me reports the same problem as me. Thinking about getting BT line put in!
Few facts about my system and network and router.
My system is no slouch!
Athlon XP 4600+ Dual Core
2Gig RAM
7800GS Graphics
Network onboard 100Mb
Sound Card Audigy Platinum
Router - Linksys WRT54G Ver 5 (Updated Firmware) 1.00.9
Modem - Motorola SB4100

Try swapping between the Ethernet and the USB connections on the modem (don't forget to power the modem off for 2 minutes before re-connecting).

If there is no improvement then ring customer services and ask for either a downgrade to 2Mb or say you want to cancel your account, as you are paying for a service you are not receiving.

Cant really do that. Im lodging in a bedroom, far out of reach of the modem for a USB connection. Have tryed connecting directly to the modem with no router in betweem, get very slightly faster connections but nothing admissable! But mainly the connection is just mine. Another person just browses with the internet for shopping, a girl ;) , so its nothing to do with other people taking the bandwidth as the pcs mainly off! ;) Tryed doing bandwidth tests when shes not online, still very low. Thanks for the suggestion tho!!

Does she have the same problems with speed?

well to be honest she wouldnt know! but i have tested both connections and they are both same. So i dont think its the router. i have done both speed tests and spyware and adware tests on both. i have tested it just with me connected, and its BAD!:erm:

Remove the router and plug your ethernet cable into the modem. Reset both the modem and your PC.

Please note you won't have the protection of the firewall in the router and your PC will be using a public IP address. Although after a few minutes of testing, you can put the router back in place.

Been there, done that! I rang helpline while i was connected directed. as they DONT support home networking, that was when they said i was having differing download speeds on my modem. still said they will not do a thing until someone else rings in with the same problem. Still so SLOW:td:

Don't tell them you have a router, and say that until they fix the problem then you are not prepared to pay for a 10Mb connection that isn't working. Ask for a downgrade to 2Mb

Trace route to the BBC to get the reverse lookup of your UBR (Proberbly something like .cable.ubr04.azte.blueyonder.co.uk)

Post it here or PM it to me and I will take a look.

Sod arguing with them, do as above and directly connect to the modem temporarily for testing purposes while you phone them. That way they cannot say "sorry it's your network". Been there, done that. If they refuse to offer any sort of support then ask for to be put through to cancellations as they are not providing you with the service you are paying for.

It looks like the local router is a bit slow. This is a Telewest fault.

There are some SNR issues on this UBR which are currently under investigation. SNR issues will cause slow speeds and intermittant connections :

I have taken a good look at your service; it looks like you are in a busy area. There don't appear to be any major issues with the cable modem itself.

SNR's are good in your area. The only thing I could not check is your personal upstream utilisation (Every time I checked your PC was switched off).

I have run a ping test to your cable modem from the UBR, this shows no packet loss even with large packets,

All of your upstreams are fairly well balanced, you could be moved to a less contended upstream but the below would be true:

1) The UBR has load balancing enabled, so instructing a device to use an alternate upstream will be over ridden by the ubr telling the device to use the upstream with the least number of devices on.

2) I can seen no reasion for moving this device off upstream 2. Looking at the logs on Realise the upstreams are evenly utilised.

Just came back from a few days holiday.
Also while i was on holiday the first day did a few speedtests on www.speedtest.net and during the day i was very quick, up to 9.5Mb. Had a go first night time again, it went down to less than a 1Mb. Is it cuz the local BY router is overloaded in aztec ?
Think its unfair on me having low speeds when im at home and high when im away in work!
Looks like that another person (gavinlew) in the forums is having the same trouble as me. I live in yate too and having the same problems.
