I had a set top box installed in my daughter's bedroom yesterday (so no more Hollyoaks and hip hop in the living room), during which the engineer branched off from the box supplying my modem, also upstairs. Is it merely coincidence that my previously satisfactory "up to 2mb" connection has now slowed to a crawl? I have ruled out any ad-, spy- or malware issues.

Coincidence or the engineer didn't check your signal levels properly when he installed. Might be worth checking the levels or calling NTL if it continues.

Simple way to test... disconnect her set top box and if your service improves, then its definitely the cause

I would say it's coincidence unless the installation's been botched.

As an aside, while working at ntl I was aware of one customer with twelve digital TV boxes as well as four cable modems...can anyone beat that? :D
