I've been considering leaving BT and going for a telewest BB and phone line.

I have an existing eurobell box on my frontroom wall, is this the box they still use or will I need a new 1?

Also, I'm wondering the situation on the cable BB, my computer is up stairs and nowhere near the wall outlet, how would I therefore connect the modem? would I need a 50 foot cable, I'm assuming unlike my current ADSL which runs down the phone extenstion lead, cable runs out of the wall socket and into the cable modem differently?

This sounds confusing after reading it back but hopefully someone will work out what I'm trying to ask. :D

I'd not recommend Telewest/NTL Broadband to my worst enemy... i used to recommend it to my friends, no more.

If there is ever a problem in your area it will take them months to fix, your speeds will be so poor, they will lie, **** customer service, no help at all, and traffic shaping too.

DO NOT SIGN UP TO ntl:Telewest

Problem is that my BT line has been acting up since July, it's next to impossible to get thru to them in Bombay to fix it too.

They keep telling me it's fixed but remains the same.

I really need a working phone line. :erm:

And as I couldn't use my current ADSL on anything other than a BT line I'm in a bit of a quandry.

What area do you live in and perhaps someone who's already on ntl:Telewest can help you by saying if the service is good or not in your area, because if you're in my area (NW London) i'd advise you to stay away from ntl/telewest

I don't know about the box, but regarding your upstairs computer, I would think the easiest solution (not involving a 50 foot cable) would be to get a router and connect your computer wirelessly, or have a look at homeplug.

There's a thread on homeplug here (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=35314)

Basically, it's networking through your mains socket.

Incidentally, I'm on Telewest BB, and mine is rock solid.

Edit: where's my manners. :welcome: darrenp

I live in Plymouth and know several people who use telewest without any major complaints.

My only issues are those asked in my initial post about connectivity.

I'd just like to confirm that, on my experience/in my area in the past 2 years, I would recommend Telewest to anyone.

I am in Plymouth (St Budeaux) and have never had a problem and have been with them for years when it was Eurobell.

Only every couple of months, not to keen on the censoring.

Posted to that loony John a few weeks back about the dockyard.

Hows you? ok I hope.

Anyway, thanks to all the others for the replies, will look into it some more before I make a decision.

P.S.

A friend at Roborough has his PC upstairs and they ran a cable up for him and put a box in the bedroom.

The engineers will install the modem where ever you ask them to install it, so long as is it safe (not somewhere stupid like an unsafe attic). Also, if you have a Eurobell or Telewest box on your house already, they won't have to dig up any roads or paths as you already have the cabling coming to your door, chances are though they might have to replace some stuff in the box. I moved into this house in Plymouth (Beacon Park) about 3 years ago and the previous owners had Eurobell here already, so all the technicians had to do to install our stuff (tv, phone and bbb) was fiddle with some stuff in the box on the wall and lay cable inside the house.

However if in the future after the installation you want the modem moved, I believe they will charge you a rediculous amount of money.

Theres nothing wrong with Telewest network in DEVON because it was set up bye EUROBELL. Local support from plymouth was brillant compaired to the now NTL:telewest CS.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

I'm just waiting on some new adsl filters because the nice BT man blamed them for my problems and if they don't cure my issue I'm signing up for cable bb, just 1 final question, I ran through the order process to see how simple it was and got to the following page (screenshot below)

Does this mean my first bill would only be 4.99?

Think that includes the £10 discount for ordering online.

Well I tried new filters on my BT line and the problem still exists so I've just been and signed up for Telewest BB. Sick of this BT BS with regards to this issue.

Hopefully they can come on the dates I selected on the signup form.:D

Right then, simple little query.

With my adsl you could just disconnect but not with this and I don't want it running if I'm away from my pc, is it ok to just turn off the modem?

I'm assuming so but clarification would be good. :)

Druchii

Yep, it's ok to just pull the power cable out. Might shorten the lifespan of the power supply mind. But it shouldn't be noticeable.
