Hi all,
I've just done a search on finding optimum config on my Webstar modem etc, (e.g. downstream being 31000000 etc.), if there's anything that can be checked to ensure it's working like it should be...
I must say I agreed to an extent about the 'English speaking' people in Blueyonder tech support. When it comes to talking complicated IT I find it much more confortable working on techy talk without struggling with a basic conversation! I work on an IT helpdesk and if I get someone with a strange accent I can't understand I tend to just get someone sent out to them rather than trying to faff around explaining things on the phone for ages!
Anyways, I got a nice lady in Blueyonder tech support last time and she was really nice to deal with. They're in Liverpool aren't they?
Straying from the point a bit, I went up from 2mb to 4mb after convincing good ol' customer relations that 2mb Tiscali at my gf's house receiving a wireless signal from a router in the neighbourhood seemed quicker! Naughty I know but people should really secure their wireless networks!
With 4mb I didn't really notice any difference at all, just a change on my bill!
Not sure if it really has any effect on general browsing but things like www.ebay.co.uk (http://www.ebay.co.uk) seem to take a few seconds to return search results. Seems slower than that 2mb Tiscali connection and that was on a PC that was lower spec than mine and also bogged down with spyware/weird apps!
I did however notice download speeds were quicker, but is that the only benefit? Just downloading files? Do I take it browsing speeds don't really improve from different speeds?
I've just tried a speed test on the tiscali website... http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk/
First result was 512kb/s!
Then 1.54MBps (download at 197kb/s)
Then 898.8kb/s
Can anyone else on Blueyonder try the above and post their results? Try a retest a few times, I'd be interested to compare...
