I had a similar problem about a week ago, now it is better than ever.
Guess I'm all set for the 10Mbs upgrade now. ;)

Hi,

Big clue here would be the Sync Light dropping which may indicate the modem is losing the downstream.

Have a look at the modems Diagnostics when the connection dies or the lights drops or even when its working and post them back here.

Point your browser to http://192.168.100.1/
User: root pass: root

On a side note whats the stability like with the router out of the equation.

:D

This sounds like what I need to do - check the modem diagnostics (see my post re: freezes in Nottingham). Can someone point in the right direction for finding out how to do this with an ancient 3COM CMX please ? I seem to remember reading something about a NULL modem cable ?

hey cyrus i have the same problem in the stoke area i rang NTL tech support and they said its ntohing to do with the modem its prob something to do with your network card drivers or your wire connecting your pc to your modem.
which is complete and utter BS. i will continue to ring them till the get off there arse and do soemthign about it and if they dont i will start looking for another ISP. pointless trying to play an online game when you get kicked off because you stoped receiving messages from the server

Hi I'm in ST3. An engineer has been out and stuck his meter on the line for 10 secs and said it was fine and then said something that was screwed on to my incoming line was not needed and took it off saying that was my problem. Unfortunately the connection interrupted problem is still happening with or without my router. I will also start looking at another isp if this doesnt get sorted. It is qiute obvious from some replies on here that there is a problem. ps do I get charged for the report a fault option when you get put through to the guys.

hey cyrus m8 i had an engineer come out this morning he stuck his meter on and said the analog signals were to high he then said i needed a filter of some kind and went to his van came back and put this thing in the line going to my cable modem called a "Forward Path Attenuator 10dB" also says this on other side "FLD5W digital signal conditioning filter" also has a website on it www.technetix.co.uk (http://www.technetix.co.uk) my internet seems fine now but only been about 30 mins since the engineer has gone so there is still time. i also asked him what had caused it he said upgrades in the system, sounds to me like most peeps having same prob since upgrades.

hope this helps

Chris

Sorry to say that I have suffered the same problem ever since I upgraded to 3mb (I'm a cmx user also). People here have suggested that it's my connection to the local green box but a cable replace made no difference.

I've learned to be philosophcal (most of thetime) and live with it - you may need to do the same...

why should we have to live with it we are paying for a service that we are not getting our full use out of, its just like say u pay for ur electric and every so often it goes off for a few seconds now that would do ur head in u know ur trying to watch a film on the TV or soemthin and it goes off again

been happening to me for months in south manchester, sent traceroutes to ntl engineers, had a visit, no improvement.

I have a linksys befr41 wired router, which is 4 years old (ish) which I was considering changing to see if that was the problem, however as it seems i'm far from being the only one, i'll put it down to ntl, and try and be philosophical about it :)

thanks Cyrus

My connection usually drops when there are two of us trying to play an line games, although occasionally it drops when just one of us is online. pulling the plug on the router for a few seconds then plugging it back in always reconnects me, which is why I suspect the router

Cyrus- everything there looks fine....

Flook- Have you checked you are using the latest firmware for the router? or tried using alternative firmware?

24-08-2005, 09:49
Hi Chris, yes mate I did a firmware update when the problem first started probably a year ago now, and it didn't make a difference. Trouble is the router is "ancient" in terms of IT kit and Linksys replaced the model at least 2 years ago, and no longer actively support the model I have.

TBH I've learned to live with the problem now, as the rest of the NTL service is excellent, and my cnnection rarely drops more than once a night anyway, and occasionally I get three or four nights with no problems at all.

Its probably time to replace the router anyway, as I suspect the one I have probably isn't able to cope with the holy grail of 10 meg :)

I know, I know....

But I have a job, surf for an hour or two in the evenings, and having given it my best shot (braving the Indian call centre 3 times, staying in for an engineer, waiting for a new cable to be pulled through), I figiure that life is just too short to worry about this. I'll move to adsl when the irritation level reaches action threshold again.
