View Full Version : Snoring!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4141030.stm
Makes interesting reading. I'm a very loud snorer, which is causing problems when my daughter stays over - a hyperactive 2 year old needs her sleep! I'm currently on the waiting list to see a ENT specialist as it looks like surgery is the only option. I'm not overweight, I don't drink or smoke and I snore no matter how I sleep, on my back or front. I've tried chin straps, sprays, all kinds of suggestions so it seems I'm left with the laser treatment to zap my palate. Yuk!
That's a shame Maki got this stop snoring stuff from Boots and now he just snores quietly instead of like a pneumatic drill!
I don't suffer from snoring, my gf suffers from me snoring!
She's very good tho, just prods me awake and generally I roll onto my side and stop for a little while.
I think only a couple of nights she's got narked off enough to growl at me, but I'm sure it's been a particularly bad night for her.
Wish I didn't snore though as it does keep her awake, and while she doesn't need beauty sleep, she does need sleep sleep!
i wake up with a dry sore throat my wife says its unbearable she once stuck her fingers down my throat "ouch" and we once got a complaint whilst camping
let us know how it goes SHE really wants to know :)
When I saw the ENT people they just told me my tonsils were rather large and sipped them out. Trouble is, it didn't fix the problem :(
Sipped them out?
/has very, very disturbing mental image :erm: :D

I usually get banished to the spare room but as this is next to the main bedroom all it does is attenuate it slightly (so she says).
We were in Istanbul last month for a friends wedding, staying in a small hotel with a bacony looking across the Bosphorus and The Golden Horn, so there was no escape for her. She now thinks she could get an Istanbul sea pilots licence as she spent a lot of time at night on the balcony watching the super tankers from the Black sea manouvering through the marked channels.
I also think she spent some time at breakfast apologising to other guests about the noise from our room !

I use Boots' own brand version of Vicks Nasal spray which stops my nose clogging up and helps to stop me snoring.
This is a spray that he sprays on to his throat and it is all natural stuff. Best of all it works :tu: :D

Just a general comment as I am sure you will do what it says on the packet but....which one is it? If it is one that contains Oxymetazoline or Xylometazoline then you should not use these long term (> 1 week) as they have a rebound effect which worsens the inflammation.
As the nose and nasal sinuses produce something in the region of 1 litre of mucus per day it's no wonder that through various mechanisms people suffer from congestion and subsequently snoring.
I would always advise seeing a health care professional about snoring especially if you find you are treating nasal congestion yourself.
The laser uvulopalatoplasty requires several trips back and is quite painful. Often patients are really put off returning because of this.
There is a new technique evolving for this called a somnoplasty. I don't know much about it or it's efficacy but it seems to be attract some interest from my ENT colleagues....Again it is performed as a course but instead of being surgical or via laser, it uses ultrasound. The pallate is heated to a high temperature which causes some form of sub mucosal lesion in the pallate which stiffens after the body has reabsorbed it....stopping the vibrations......
That's the theory anyway...
Ear plugs or sleep in separate rooms..I frequently end up in the spare bedroom 'cos himself says I snore and I get sick of being poked awake.

It's the first one, however I only use one "shot" per nostril per night and it's not left me feeling more "clogged up" than before I started using it. I've always had problems with nasal congestion as has my mother, so I think it's something "genetic" as it were.

I'll certainly have a think about it if things get worse.

That sounds like Australian foreplay:

I growl at Russ somewhere between 5 and 10 times a night to try to stop him snoring.
It's truly awful.
I have ended up sleeping on my sofa before now cos I just can't sleep. And he refuses to keep the chin strap on even though it might work AND causes much amusement...
Very selfish I say ;)

Speak to your dentist about anti-snore devices such as Therasnore or Silensor.
These are very effective (>80% success rates - better than surgery, not to mention a hell of a lot safer!). They work by holding the lower jaw in a slightly forward position relative to the upper jaw. This pulls on the tissues of the oropharynx (those around the tonsils into the throat) making them taut rather than hanging loosely. It is air turbulence around these tissues, and the vibration produced in these tissues as air passes over them, that produces the snore.
Both the above systems are adjustable, so getting just the right fit and tension on the tissues is easy. You'll be looking at about £200-300 for the above systems, 1-2 appointments, and nothing nastier than impressions of your teeth. They work from the first night and should last several years before they would need replacing.
Hope this helps!
Oops - forgot to say: some jaw types (think Jimmy Hill) are not good candidates for this type of device. I also have the appropriate qualifications to suggest these devices before anyone asks!

So Russ has a strap-on? :erm:

Some mild TMJ effects have been noted, but these are usually related to a device set too far forward. This is why these devices acn only be obtained via dentists - they do require proper assessment of the patient. :D

I agree!
any chance of any pictures :)

I dearly wish there were but sadly not. If I can ever get him to wear it again I will try and capture it for posterity.

You know what? I think that this is all a little unfair.
Snoring isn't funny, and it's certainly disruptive in relationships - I hardly think it's fair to be making jokes at Russ' expense here guys. Let's have a little compassion eh?

That's it lots of comments but little help..at least I was offering a practical suggestion of sorts...
But of course it has all descended into innuendo and almost smut. :(

;) OK when is it going to descend to real smut then ?

edit......or do they?

Aww come on Coggy I offered a suggestion.
I have spent lots of sleepless nights being kept awake by Makis snoring and I still can joke about it
But of course it has all descended into innuendo and almost smut. :(I'm sorry, it's my fault. I prostrate myself before you and await my punishment :nworthy:
Though in my defence maam, I would like to cite the careless reference to Russ's 'strap' made by clarie :D

And in my defence I would like to point out that my original comment was about Russ' chin strap, and that someone else turned it into smut.

My missus snores quite bad, I usually have to sleep in the computer room where I can't hear her over the noise of the fileserver.
Yeah which for some reason he refuses to wear for me...
Selfish as I said.
Aww Russ you're no fun https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2005/10/5.gif

Ok just to clear things up as regards the chin strap.
It is actually like a big plaster that goes just under the bottom lip and curves up to the sides of the nose. It is flesh coloured which means that in the dark I couldn't see it and it just looked like Russ was being very tight-lipped.
It was rather amusing. But he claimed it didn't work and took it off before I could decide for myself whether it was effective.
So we are back to sleepless nights interrupted now and again by the barking of 'Russ!' (by me). :dozey:
Oh come on hun you liiike it when I make fun of you...
I'll deal with YOU later.
Chin strap? ..Im picturing a muzzle
Imagine a 'handlebar' moustache. Then turn it upside-down so the 'bridge' bit goes under your bottom lip and the 'handle' bits go up as far as the side of your nose.
Now imagine it's adhesive and made of the same fabric as a plaster.
That's the chin strap. It stops your chin from sagging when you sleep which in turn is supposed to stop your jaw sagging and placing pressure on your throat which the manufacturers say causes snoring.

Maybe not but if you snored like a tractor then your other half might politely request that you do so...

I had an ex that "snored like a tractor", it used to drive me bonkers :disturbd: I think that a lot of the sleep problems I have now lead back to that.

"Politely request"?

I cant stand snoring.
On holiday this year I have to share a room with my cousin who snores. I cant get back to sleep and instead have to make a loud noise to wake them up so they realise or throw a pillow at them lol.
