View Full Version : Connection speed changed without my knowledge!!

After speaking to NTL CS several times today - it appears my connection (which I thought was faulty as it was running slow) - is perfectly fine and somehow got changed down to 1 meg from 3 meg.

NTL CS in India have been next to useless in getting to the bottom of what happened - if there are any friendly NTL CS people in the UK - I'd really appreciate finding out how my package got changed without the knowledge or permission of the account holder!

Just spoke to someone helpful in the UK who says that it looks like a system error - apparently some people are being upgraded without their knowledge too - and only being charged their original rate!! The flip side is I was downgraded but was still getting charged for 3 meg.....

....everyone run those speed tests!!

Ring Broadband Technical Support in Cardiff on 0845 650 0121 or 0925 and ask them to check, I had the same problem yesterday (in IP4) and they sorted it straightaway. I also had similar poor service from the Indian Call Centre.

I've called 0845 650 0121 a couple of times recently, unfortunatly I didn't get through to the Cardiff call centre :(

I run the speed tests every few weeks, just check every thing is ok. They are reassuring. :)

This happened to me before when the 3mb packages was kicking in. But the speed was slow for about 2 weeks before that, I called customer, when i was on the 1.5mb package services up and they said someone actually changed it to the 1mb package.

Got that sorted, but they dont know who changed it, and it was on their end.

I smell something fishy.

I read this and thought that I might as well check my speed. Using different tests, I've had 3x1meg results, 2x2meg results and even 1x4.5meg result :erm: I should be on 2meg. Robin Walker's and adslguide's tests gave the 1meg result.

Do you think that I should ring tech support to see if what happened above has happened to me?

It's just strange the different results. I don't know if it is what the OP said or a problem with the connection.

If you're using Robin Walker's test, you have to clear your cache before you try again

So is it worth ringing tech support to see if it is what the original poster said?

Anyone using an Ambit modem can check the speed doing the following.

Open a browser window and go to 192.168.100.1 password and user id are root click on operation configuration check what the following read

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000 bps

The above figures are for a 2mb connection.

This will only work with an Ambit modem.

Would you f***ing believe it!!

They've only gone and done it again!! No one can tell me why it keeps happening - if any sensible NTL people are in - can someone please either a) investigate it - or b) escalate it to someone that can?

Thanks

Hi, i ran this off Robin's speed test and i wondered if this
is what i should be expecting? I am on a 3meg connection. I
downloaded a file yesterday while on the phone with tech
support and it downloaded at about 270k i think.

Thanks very much in advance!

2nd 128K took 360 ms = 364089 Bytes/sec = approx 3029 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 343 ms = 382134 Bytes/sec = approx 3179 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 360 ms = 364089 Bytes/sec = approx 3029 kbits/sec

The proof!

Another successful ending.
