I think i am being taxed way to much, how can I sort it out? I have told my work and they said i am on the right tax code (489 L)

i want to double check, what is the best thing to do....for example my income tax i paid on my last payslip was 359.02 and national insurance i paid 65.50 this is only for 3 weeks work....

489L is the correct basic code for someone under the age of 65 in the current tax year. :)

This means you get £4895 per year before paying any tax.

Are you paid monthly or weekly?

What was your gross pay?

What are your year to date figures?

You can check what you're tax code should be here:-
http://www.ir35calc.co.uk/uk_tax_codes_guide.aspx

There's a PAYE/NI Net Salary Tax Calculator on the site for you to use aswell.

Im paid weekly, but i have to fill in timesheets. So my last pay slip is 3 time-sheets compiled together and my net pay was 771.05 total deduction was 513.32 to me it seems very high...

not sure what my years to date figure is...

You should be able to check this with your P60 which your employer should give you each year.

Have you only just started work? If so you are most likely on emergency tax even though you have your tax code. You will get it back but chase up the pay department just to be sure.

Whoever does your payroll as they are also who will give the excess paid back to you. It should have been sorted out by now though.

I should go an put a rocket up them first thing Monday (in a nice polite way of course, you don't want to end up with no pay at all).
